Re: Julia Glushko

Julia opened this season with 2 failures to get through 25K qualifiers, with 2 wins against weak opposition and a lopsided loss against a lower ranked player each time (it's worth noting that the second one was to the Austrian Tina Schiechtl, who has been Glushko's then biggest scalp last May, but has dropped considerably in ranking since).

When I saw her draw this week in the funnily name Surprise (Arizona) 25K tournament , I was expecting the same, but Julia scored a tough, impressive 6-4 4-6 6-4 win over the talented Kristie Ahn in the last qualifying round. To those who don't remember, Ahn, then ranked ~#750, made a name for herself last summer by beating three top-150 players and making it to the US Open main draw, where she played a respectable match against the red-hot Safina; the young America has played scarcely since.

Anyway, Julia easily beat a higher ranked player in R1 of the MD, and has a great chance to advance further as she's facing a 17 y.o. American who's never played an ITF main draw until this week.

Re: Julia Glushko

Julia got served a double-bagel by an unranked, 16 y.o. American girl in a 50K qualies
I don't remember her losing any match by this score since the 2006 Israeli Finals (against Shahar), let alone to an opponent of this calibre

Re: Julia Glushko

Tough draw - this was the best player she ever faced in a ranking event (which excludes matches vs Shahar in ISR-ch). Granville will surely return to top-200, maybe top-100. Would be nice to see a closer scoreline though.

And this completes the last of my (year in advance) ranking predictions (Azarenka top 10, Cornet top 20, I'm not sure if there was another one).
It's still unclear however whether she can make much progress from here. Let's just say I bet on her reaching top-300 when she was ~#750, but wouldn't put my money on her reaching top-200 now...

Re: Julia Glushko

Her semis match will be a real test: DUBOIS, Stephanie (CAN).

I'm not sure she has ever played a top 100 player, beside Israeli ones.

Re: Julia Glushko

She hasn't, and won't play one this time too, as Dubois is just outside the top 100 at #109. This is the highest ranked player Julia has ever met in a ranking tournament (previously it was Voracova), but not the first former top 100 one - that was Granville, six weeks ago.

Putting together my previous post and yours, Julia has never even been close with any top 200 player, besides beating Palkina last August en route to her best career result so far - 50K semi during the Olympics, but the latter is one of the weakest players ever to enter the top 200.
Taking a set from Dubois, or even losing something like 4-6 5-7, would be a step forward in proving that she can deal with some WTA girls.
