Well, there are 31 miilion people in Canada. My guess is that it's about one third or about 10 million.

Well if you look up the population of the province of Quebec... at least 95% of them speak french there.

There are also French speaking communities scattered all over the nation, in all of the provinces.
So its hard to say..

It depends what you mean by French speaking as well... do you mean fluently?

Cause the number of Canadians who can speak a little French will be far larger than those who are fluent in it.

I wrote an essay on the French culture in Canada in my last year of high school. I'll give you the numbers I found but keep in mind that they are about 5 years old so the numbers might have changed a bit. I'll try to adapt them to the new demographic situation.

In 1995 about 24% of the Canadian population has French as its mother tongue. That percentage is still decreasing. In 1971 it was 26,3% and in 1981 it was already down to 25,7%. I think that today it must be around 23% on a total population of 31,500,000, means that about 7,245,000 are native French-speakers.

80% of the Québec population are French-speakers, which must be around 6,000,000 people. There are about 500,000 French-speakers in Ontario, 250,000 in New Brunswick and the others are dispersed over the remaining provinces but they are never more than 5% of the total population of those provinces.

Hope this helps a bit.

Those numbers only account for those whose First Language is French. There are several other english speaking Canadians who have learned French as their second language. Any figures there?

Almost anyone born and raised in Canada under the age of 30 will have taken some French classes in school. I am 31 and grew up in Ontario, and 6 years of classes were mandatory for me.

As far as I know, the six years of taking French class, is still mandatory.
Of course its offered longer than that, but we're no longer required to take it.

I always found French class to be the most boring thing in existence.. I could never understand why it was so hard for them to make it interesting for us.

Regardless, I still took French longer than I had too, cause I felt it was something that I should learn.

I suggest you also ask for information from the Canadian embassy in your country. I did that too for my essay and they are very friendly and helpful. They sent me a lot of useful information.

Barrie: I'm hardly fluent. But I understand some French, I can read it a little, and if I go to Quebec I can order off a menu, and ask all the important questions.
I should know it better than I do though.

Well I suppose the question should be: "Becca, can you talk dirty to me in French while we are in bed?"
