Re: Australian Open Singles
All added GeeTee.
I will "sweep" the results again to catch and mop up.
Question: can we safely assume Peter Smith (from 1930) is a Mrs Peter Smith?

Re: Australian Open Singles
Hi Rollo, actually she's a Miss Peter Smith!
PS - Mrs Ernest (I think) Bond is driving me up the wall.
PPS - The 'M Elliott' who lost R1 of 1926 Wimbledon to Nuthall is Mary Elliott, the NSW country champion who reached the QF of the first Australian championships.
and (you might know already) that there are two Australian Margaret Wilsons who played tennis in the 1930s. There is the 'Muff' Wilson, the NSW country champion, who played at Wimbledon and in the late 1930s, Margaret Wilson, the young Victorian country champion.

Re: Australian Open Singles
Excellent work Andrew. They were probably the next lot I was gonna be digging for so that's saved a ton of work. We've had a good run of late!
I have a few more from minor stars who didn't feature in the Aussie champs. Maybe we should list all of the players in one of the Aussie threads so we have a common list to refer to (and hopefully complete)??
What do you and Rollo and any other sad geeks who are interested in this kinda stuff think??
PS - Here's another Tasmanian name:
Minnie Richardson (Mrs James Magner from 1928) who reached the Aussie SF in 1925.
In 1928, she was on her way to play tennis in England and hoping to compete at Wimbledon but got engaged to the ship's doctor en route and was married in London during June. I can't find any record of her playing in England that year, but perhaps she had other things on her mind.. The couple returned to Tasmania in 1929 and she began to concentrate on golf, but she did return to play doubles, winning the 1934 Tasmanian championship with Mrs Bond.

Re: Australian Open Singles
I, speaking as one sad geek, would love to see that. What I have collected, and could copy, is a list of 602 Australian women who began play before 1961. If that would help get you started, tell me where to post and I will. I've been adding some things from your recent additions, but not everything. It's big shortfall is that it's somewhat arbitrary as to whether I use maiden or married name for alphabetizing. It does include the first year that they played, as far as I know.

Re: Australian Open Singles
I have an idea-what if we finally tried a permanent version of a Name Roster for all the women, but primarily concentrating first on women who contested the Aussie?
This would allow both David and I to edit in any additions. In addition we could scoop up all of those hard to find Aussie women, and finally it would give us a "control" factor by keeping track of who we have done by noting which slam we are working on. (For example-after adding all of the 1922 Aussie contestants we could move on to 1923, etc).

I have a way around this. We simply cross-reference them.
Using Margaret Court as an example (and we could come up with a format agreed on by the majority)
Main Entry:
Court, Margaret (nee Margaret Smith) (Australia)
Born
Died
Married
Children
Nickname(s): "The Arm"
Career Span: 1958-1975. Played under maiden name until 1967.
other info (we could set a maximum number of lines)
Alternate entry:
Smith, Margaret SEE COURT
That would direct anyone looking for Margaret Smith to go to the main entry under Court.
The trick would be to agree to a template/format (easy enough) and then laying out a large number of posts in approximate alphabetical order.
And then finally David or I could make it a sticky thread so it becomes permanent
We could keep a separate thread for submissions and discussion, with David and I adding "Done!" or 'Finished" whenever we add names to the list. The other neat thing about a discussion thread is we could iron out any debate over which entry should be the main name.
Thoughts?

Re: Australian Open Singles
Well, it certainly seems ambitious. My first reaction was maybe we should start with Albania and work our way through the alphabet - at least we might get one country done.
I have about 6,700 players in my database from the beginning to 1961 and Ugarte and others are finding more all the time. Typing all that out in text format seems huge. Is there any way those involved could have access to a shared Excel file? I could copy my Access database into that and then we could add fields as we dreamed them up - like the ones you mentioned above. Anyone with clearance could add names, marriages, birthdates etc. Just an idea - I have no idea if that's technically possible.

Thanks Chris! I added it. Couldn't find Blackman in the draw-perhaps she withdrew?

My apologies, Rollo - it's as well you spotted it. I'm making too many faux pas recently.
It should be Coghlan-Robinson.

No apology needed Chris-it helped me to update the draw, for which I thank you.

Re: Australian Open Singles
Hi folks adn especially our Aussie researchers:
In incorporating the 1952 Australian Open draw into the 1952 thread I crosschecked what Andrew Tas posted (8 years ago!!!) with what Wikipedia has. I added some first names where that was the only discrepancy, but I came up with these 4 more major discrepancies:
Andrew has: Wikipedia has:
J. Diggle ----- Dorothy
H. O’Donnell ----- Margaret
I. Olcrenshaw ----- Jill Olerenshaw
J. Marlin ----- Joyce Martin
Any knowledge or opinions??
Thanks

Hello. Wow 8 years ago. How time gets away. I can confirm that Wikipedia is correct on all counts. Jill Olerenshaw's maiden name though is Tuckfield (Husband's first name is Ian).
