Notes:

Held in the middle of the season, this was designated the tour championships in 1971, the first full year of an independent women's tour. Billie Jean King dominated the circuit that year and fittingly won the first ever women's series finale.

*In most sources this event is not credited as a tour championships.

Durr-Stove [2] d. Schallau-Teeguarden 6-1, 6-3

Final
Casals/King d. Durr/Stove 6-1 6-7 7-5

-------------------------
Prize Money $100,000

This was a $100,000 tournament, with the champion winning $32,000. Runner-up was $14,500; semifinalists got $7,250; QF $3,625, and first round losers $1,812.50. Doubles champs got $5,00; RU $1,250; and SF $1,250.

Evert tested in a two hour marathon by Rosie Casals. One sparkling rally lasted 46 shots. Wade fell down some stairs early in the week and played with painkillers despite an injured back.

Poor Navratilova had to deal with a heckler in her first round match. A spectator shouted "You Russian!" at her in the seconf set, temporarily upsetting Martina.

Goolagong ends the year with two major upsets of world 32 (King) and #1 (Evert). With two majors in one year (she also won the Aussie) Evonne keeps the women's tour close at the top. Her first prize of 32,000
$ US is an all-time women's record up to now. Amazingly enoufh it was only Evonne's second win EVER vs. King.

Colgate Series Championships
Landover, Maryland, 7-11 January 1981

The 1980 year actually extended into early-the year ending championships coming after the Aussie Open and before the start of the indoor tour.

Format: Round robin with single elimination semis and final.

1st round: Navratilova d. Turnbull 6-2 6-4, Austin-Ruzici 60 63, Mandlikova-Jaeger 75 63, Evert-Shriver 64 62
2nd round: Austin-Mandlikova 63 60, Jaeger-Ruzici 36 62 76, Turnbull-Shriver 75 75, Navratilova-Evert w.o.
3rd round: Jaeger-Evert w.o., Turnbull-Mandlikova 46 63 63

Semifinal
Austin d. Turnbull 6-2 6-1
Jaeger d. Navratilova 6-4 4-6 6-1

Final Austin-Jaeger 62 62
3rd Place: Turnbull d. Navratilova 1-6 7-5 6-2

Doubles

SF
Reynolds/P. Smith d. K. Jordan/A. Smith 6-3 1-6 6-4
Casals/Turnbull d. Stove/Shriver 6-4 6-4

Final
Casals/Turnbull d. Reynolds/P.Smith 63 46 76.

Evert withdraws with a high temperature. Jaeger makes the final after surviving a match point (and elimination) vs. Virginia Ruzici. After winning the final Austin lays claim to #1 with "two majors to one" over Evert. Austin was counting the Avon and Colgate as majors while discounting Evert's win at the French. The computer and most experts saw it differently, and Evert finished as #1 in most minds.

Bunge and Hanika played a match for the third place. Bunge won 5-7 6-4,3-2 ret.

Hanika maintained having had stomach pains, but at that point of the match the withdrawel came very surpringly to anyone (including Bunge).

Also, there was a Jaeger/Hanika dispute. Some of their comments:
Hanika: "Andrea plays unbelievably boring and is also not very nice". Jaeger: "She once hit a smash in my direction on purpose and several times she insulted me with German invectives that I understand but don't won't to repeat." Hanika: "I apologised for that smash. Andrea is not very nice on the court, she behaves like a super-star and tries to manipulate the linesmen."

King about Bunge "She is the most talented of all the upcoming players, she'll bring it far".

Navratilova was the oldest player of the tournament at age 24, Jaeger was the youngest (15). She still has the record of the youngest finalist at the championships ever.

------------------------------------
A format chance came into effect as Virginia Slims takes over a unified tour from Toyota's sponsership. The 16 woman field is by invitation and is single elimination. Tour events from the start of 1983 will count towards the 84 finals, with the top 16 gaining entry.

Navratilova reasserts her dominance of the women's tour by crushing all opposition. 13,244 see Martina inflict the most lopsided defeat ever upon Chris Evert in the finals. After 2-2 Evert did not win another game. Evert remarked that Navratilova "played flawless tennis after the 5th game. " Of 7 deuce games Martina took 6, a testament to her mental tenacity.

It was fitting that in winning Martina easily disposed of the only 3 women to beat her at all in 1982. Shriver, Hanika, and Evert all went down, gaining a mere 6 games in 6 sets.

Billie Jean King stunned #3 seed Jaeger in round one. Andrea claimed she couldn't move because of an Achilles tendon. King remarked. 'I think she really bagged it, just didn't want to be out there.' Tracy saved a match point in the the event's only dramatic match, a 2 hr. 45 minute marathon over Ruzici that ended in an 8-6 tiebreak. She advanced no further however, as Hanika upset her in the quarters. Everyone was unpredictable in this event-everyone except the top two.

It was a theme that repeated itself in 1983-a year when Jaeger and Austin continued to fade and the gap between
the tour and the top two women widened even as Martina distanced herself from Chris.

A last match of match was Potter's upending Turnbull. Babsy fired down 17 aces in dropping only 10 points the entire match in her 9 service games.

Notable mainly for the final, which was the first 3 out of five set women's match since the US Women's final of 1902! Navratilova's dominance of the tour led the WTA to change the format. 78,577 tripped through the gates for the wek, including a record crowd of 15,309 for the finals.

Of Andrea Jaeger it was written "So carefree and nonchalant did Miss Jaeger look that there must be serious doubt whether one so intelligent should continue with a career on tour."
