MIAMI, Fla. (AFP) - Swiss star Martina Hingis sank three places to seventh in the WTA Tour rankings released here Monday, narrowly denying Justine Henin a rise on the list after the Belgian's first victory of the year.
Hingis slid behind new No. 4 Serena Williams, who lost to Henin in the German Open final, as well as Williams' American compatriots Monica Seles and Lindsay Davenport. Henin missed matching the former world number one by only three points.
Venus Williams stretched her lead over second-ranked Jennifer Capriati atop the ratings from 78 points to 142. Belgium's Kim Clijsters remained third.
The biggest jump among the top 30 was by Israel's Anna Smashnova, who leaped 24 spots to 21st.
