10000$ Albufeira, Portugal, Feb13th, winner: Sorana-M. Cirstea

10000$ Albufeira Ladies Open

The place:
Albufeira (pron.IPA /aɫ.βu.'fɐj.ɾɐ/) is a Portuguese city in the Algarve. It has 19,500 inhabitants. The population expands significantly in the summer, as Albufeira is one of the leading tourist resorts of the region. New developments include a marina, golf courses plus innumerable hotels and apartment blocks for the annual flood of visitors.
Most tourists will arrive via nearby Faro airport a short 40 minute drive way. The architecture of the town ranges from typically Algarvian narrow streets with pale white and sometimes tiled houses though to the very modern tourist developments. The apartments near the newly built marina are a unique spash of pinks, blues and yellows, dubbed legoland by the local inhabitants.

Once the sun sets the centre of Albufeira comes alive with bars, restaurants and shops to suit most tastes from authentical Portuguese fare to Irish Pub and Sports Bar.Astronomy is a good option too,GOAAA the local Astronomy Group can provide an amazing dark sky full of bright stars over the local beach. Local culinary specialities are the cataplana (steamed shellfish) and the caldeirada (fish stew), and the simpler grilled sardines.

Albufeira is a good base to explore the region with many smaller and less well known beaches within a short drive.

The tournament:
Surface: Hard
Previous Winners:
2003: Silvia Disderi ITA d. Sylvia Montero FRA 61 61
2004: Monica Niculescu ROM d. Irina Kotkina RUS 61 36 60

In 2003 Silvia Disderi, who was a very promising junior player from Italy, surprisingly won the Albufeira Ladies Open. Top seed Nika Ozegovic lost in round 2 vs Linda Smolenakova. The four girls who reached the SF (Montero, Singla, van Hartingsveldt and Disderi) all did not fullfil the expections. Montero and Singla are injured, Disderi may have retired. Other current top players who competed that year: Nan-Nan Liu, Hanna Nooni, Maria-Jose Argeri, Ana Timotic and Yan-Ze Xie.
In 2004 Monica Niculescu was the winner and didnt have too much problems with Irina Kotkina in the final. But Kotkina, who came out of the qualies could be satisfied with e.g. a win over Maria-Jose Argeri. Sophia Melikishvili, also coming from the quali, reached the SF as Mathilde Johansson. Top seed Kildine Chevalier lost in round 2 vs Yevgenia Savransky. Last year winner Silvia Disderi lost her first match

Sanne in the quallies.

Hmm I wonder if Pauline will get a special WC coz she was meant to play quallies here, but made SFs at Vale de Lobo...

Ipek said in a interview that she won't play here. She is too tired and she wasn't given the special exempt, because it went to Polona and Pauline.

Good luck to the Portuguese players

No I didn't go. Algarve is too far away

But on the tournament's site there's a short interview with Ipek. She talked about her injury, when she aggravated it playing the WTA tournament in Istambul. Also, she said that she wouldn't play the qualifying in Albufeira, because she was too tired to play more than one match in a day. She said that she hadn't played so many matches for a long time and that her legs are hurting. She doesn't want to imagine that she still has to play the final. She thinks that tomorrow, she'll only worry about the public having fun, because abou winning... The most funny part was that when she saw Carla Suarez practising for the final, she asked her: "Don't you want to save some energy for the final tomorrow?"
