Thumbs up Isabella Holland

Isabella Holland is one of the world's top ranked 14-year olds. The Queenslander is currently sitting at 143 on the ITF Junior Ranks and, according to yesterday's Courier Mail, has been awarded a wildcard into the WTA Tour Event in Sweden later this year!!!

Monika Wejnert is another 14-year old and she recently won the Queensland Open defeating two WTA Ranked players. She now joins the likes of Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova and Evonne Cawley as winners of the prestigous event!!

GO GIRLS

Queensland seems to be going good, if only NSW was as interested. I know a guy who is ranked 80 or something in Australia, Troy Smith and he had to move to Victoria to train. Silly NSW.

No offence guys, but fuck this pisses me off. Our girls get no handouts at all while Aussies get a career served up on a silver platter! (Our juniors are way better than yours!)

Thats because we dont have the $$. Your girls get at least 15k for loosing 60 60 in 10 mins at the AO every year. With that kind of $$ we could do big things! Its just not fair. Im in a bitchy mood tonight, so if you want a fight, you got it bitch! (Just kidding, you know I love you Rick ) But anyone else ...bring it!

I agree with Bakersboy that the current crop of NZ juniors are better than ours. I'd love to see an alliance with the Aussie and NZ tennis authorities! I think one WC in the main draw of Oz Open and one in qualies, should be reserved for our Kiwi neighbours.

I have to say I have never heard of Isabella Holland. What the hell is she doing getting a WC into a WTA event?

Well yeah, their top junior players are better than ours, but as you said we have more depth. Not sure if that will eventuate into anything in the long run though.

Interesting thread. Typical hype on an Aussie junior. Lets build them up ala Joanne Limmer, Anabelle Ellwood and see if they come crashing down.

Ummm, I bet the $$$ will there for NZ junior tennis program if the likes of Jones & Erakovic etc... make the top 20-50. A government isn’t going to invest money into a sport when the likes of your national netball and rugby teams are world class, (not to forget world competitive cyclists, basketball and hockey teams) and NZ tennis has barely had a pulse over the last two decades. Tennis in Australia gets some cash and grand slam status because of our rich history and our smattering of top (or once top) players. Years back Australia sent teams to every major tournament when it wasn’t financially viable, worked their arses off in the administration of tennis and were a hugely successful nation in grand slams. Because of that hardwork in the past we are reaping the benefits. Is it fair? Who knows, but the many people that have put their life and soul into world tennis from Australia may say yes. The many countries who cry foul over this, couldn’t give a stuff many years ago when there was no money or publicity in the sport.

Hopefully these NZ juniors will be trail-blasers for tennis, but you can’t blame the NZ government for not giving $$ when their last internationally competitive players was top 30 Belinda Cordwell back in the 80 - early 90’s. The money is there I bet, it’s just a case of someone making a case for it by putting the score on the board first.

I hope the NZ juniors don’t fall into the Aussie trap of not being fit enough to last on tour due to a lack of tough competition in their home country. For years our juniors moving into senior ranks kept on getting injured…. If I go back years to the Byrnes, Thompsons, McDonalds who had great talent but could never get fit and then to a lesser extent Adamczak, Hori, who have struggled too, the increased pressure to make up lost time, (because most European gals have peaked in their teens, whereas ours girls peak a lot later) often brings about over-training and therefore increased likelihood of injury. Now I notice that Marina Erakovic is still struggling with injury for about 6-12 months and Ive heard nothing of Eden Marama who had some decent results at one stage. It’s a definite pitfall for both our countries and often is the key factor between a successful transition between juniors and seniors.
