Turundzhov into Italian Open Quallies, despite slight hamstring strain!
14 year old Australian Daniela Turundzhov has entered next week's Tennis Masters Series Event in Rome, despite a cloud around a slight hamstring strain that she suffered in her loss to Barbara Miele at this weeks Citta di Prato junior event.
Turundzhov who received treatment twice in the 2nd set of the match against Miele, teamed up with Catherine Pierce to win their first round doubles match, however Turundzhov seems to have aggravated the injury and seems in doubt to play out the rest of her doubles matches in Firenze.
Il Globo managed to get an interview with the Aussie:
Q: Daniela, how is your hamstring?
A: It's ok at the moment, a little sore.
Q: Will you play your doubles match?
A: Well, we won today and I sort of felt it a lot more than I did in my singles, but I still have tonight to rest and I'll leave it till the morning. I hope I can but we'll see, it's not too bad at the moment.
Q: You entered the qualifications in Rome, how important is it for you to play an event like that?
A: Oh, it's vital I think to play a big event like that. I mean, even the qualifications is very tough, you know, could be the field of a lower Tier event. At the moment, I'm feeling confident and tough mentally so I'm going to take it a match at a time and see what happens, my aim is to make the main draw.
Q: Does that mean you won't play Santa Croce?
A: No, I apologise to the organisers of that event but it's in my best event to gain exposure on a professional level. I think they'll understand.
Q: Katerina Shawfink 1st rnd, how will you approach that?
A: I've seen her around and she can pound the ball with almost no effort, so I expect a tough battle. I have to be patient and move her around, maybe come into the net but I'm keeping a few things secret.
Q: Will you be playing doubles?
A: I'd like to, yeah. I don't have a partner at the momenrt. So if anyone's interested, call me (laughs).
Thanks Daniela
Arrivederci!
Daniela Turundzhov and Anna Kroulikova

Liashenko beats Lapentti in an exhibition for World Cancer Foundation
Reutuers
Even if her recent success aren't impressive, Larissa Liashenko is still as generous as ever. Today, in an exhibition that was played in Minsk for the World Cancer Foundation, Liashenko played Nicoletta Lapentti. Lapentti, which basicly dissapiered from the tour after turning pro was approached by Liashenko to play in the event. Lapentti immediatly agreed to play. Both players have been touch by cancer in recent year. Liashenko's mother Elena is currently fighting fiercly with lung cancer while Lapentti lost her dad, Octavio, to brain cancer. The event which was being played in Liashenko's hometown, drew 15,000 spectators. Liashenko won the match 6-1, 6-1, 6-7(8), 7-5. ''It took her lot's of time to get her rythym back. Her match really started after the 2nd set. Her game is a kind of game I don't like to play against. She basicly doesn't miss a ball. She has a loopy forehand and a wondeful sliced backhand. It took her some times but when she found her groove, it was a very fun and hard match''!, said Liashenko. Lapentti, on her side commented: ''Oh my good! I was so rusty! I'm pretty sure I didn't look very good to watch in the first two sets(Laughs)! After, I found my rythym and I realized how much I missed the game of tennis. I stoped playing because I wanted to take care of my dad who was sick and since he past away two months ago, I was kind of in a depression but after playing, I think that starting to play again could be my therapy!!!''
After the match, a $1 500 000 check was given to the president of the WCF, Kenny Harrisson.

Larissa Liashenko hits a shot to Nicoletta Lapentti of Ecuador. The match which was being played to raise fund was won by Liashenko 6-1, 6-1, 6-7(8), 7-5 in front of 15 000 fans. The event raised $1 500 000.

I've took the name Lapentti to prevent anyone on getting mad! Plus, he(nicoletta's manager, Alexander who is too lazy to play again ) is one of my friend so I think he won't care!

Discovery of Documents unveil Turundzhov's age
Here is a small excerpt from a Belgrade Newspaper:
'Belgrade-born Daniela Turundzhov is not 14, as Tennis Australia officials told the FWTT Tour. Daniela is actually 16, and her birth certificate which was thought to be lost after her family fled Belgrade has been discovered by Turundzhov's mother Lilijana. Without any proof earlier, the family weren't paid any attention to when arguing the age of their daughter. Coincidentally, if the details are correct, Daniela would have celebrated her birthday yesterday. In other news concerning Turundzhov, Yugoslav Tennis Officials approached the player in Italy about a future with her former country. The response? A polite no from the Australian.'
