Things seems to be around the same as they were last year. The same players seem to be involved as well. Justine even with playing one tourni this fall is likely to get in. Venus is basically where she was last year. She'll need to do something special at Philadelphia likely to get in.
There is an interesting scenario that Dementieva and Patty might want to put themselves in just to make sure they aren't put in a sticky situation (8th player at YEC is the tourni's choice).
Dementieva supposedly is still considering taking a wild card at Philadelphia. With Mauresmo gone out of Linz she probably needs to win that tourni and still take the WC.
Patty is likely to eclipse Justine with her play at Linz and Philly.
If Dementieva does well at Linz and then takes the WC at Philly, then she also is able to get ahead of Justine.
That would make Justine the 8th player at the YEC and with her winning a slam this year likely insuring that if she wants to play in the YEC she will. It also ensures that Patty and Dementieva will make the YEC without technicalities and wondering if Venus will take their place.
Good Luck To all still in the race!!!

Zurich was very good for Patty. Imagine if she played well the whole indoor season.

1. Martina Hingis
2. Lindsay Davenport
3. Steffi Graf

But Davenport and Pierce still there, 30 years old.
Has the bar really been raised ... ?

1975
1. Chris Evert
2. Billie Jean King
3. Evonne Goolagong Cawley
4. Martina Navratilova
5. Virginia Wade
6. Margaret Smith Court
7. Olga Morozova
8. Nancy Richey Gunter
9. Francoise Durr
10. Rosie Casals
1994
1. Steffi Graf
2. Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
3. Conchita Martinez
4. Jana Novotna
5. Mary Pierce
6. Lindsay Davenport
7. Gabriela Sabatini
8. Martina Navratilova
9. Kimiko Date
10. Natasha Zvereva
Everyone in 1975 was gone.... Navratilova still in top 10 at 38...
Has the bar been raised?
Edit: The top 10 of 1975 has 85 slams between them, while the top 10 in 1994 only has 52...

Interesting point.
but watch pictures of young Navi in 1975 (18 years old).
She became a lean athlete only in later years. We must not forget she didn't win her 3rd (of 18) slams before her 25th birthday. 15 of her slams were won between 1981 and 1987 when she was 25-30 years old. Her "median" slam winning age was 27 (age when completing 50 % of her slam tally). Most probably she was nearer to her peak in 1994 than in 1975.
BTW, Graf won 15 of her 22 slams BEFORE she became 25 years old. Her median slam winning age was 23.

Believe me, if Venus had played the 5 events this fall that she was scheduled and was not injured, we would not be having this discussion!
