2. UK TV-alert
--------------

The evening-sessions on Rod Laver Arena will be televised on BBC Red Button from 08:00 GMT each day of the tournament (digital viewers press Red or tune into Freeview 301).

This coverage will be followed by highlights on a continuous loop (from 17:00 GMT, or 19:00 GMT on Freeview, with daily variations).

Of course, on the days that Andy Murray is playing (his first match is on Monday), the BBC will probably show a repeat of his match at 08:00 GMT instead of the live tennis!

I urge all BBC viewers who care about women's tennis to lodge a complaint whenever the BBC uses Murray as an excuse not to show the women's match on the Rod Laver Arena evening-session:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/homepage/

Additionally, all Murray's matches will be televised live on either BBC 1 or BBC 2 (the first such programme is on BBC 2 on Monday at 03:30 GMT). I think it's quite possible that bits of other matches might be shown in these programmes if Murray's match starts late or finishes early, as was occasionally the case when the BBC used to do this for Tim Henman.

There will also be tennis on BBC 1 at 13:00 GMT on Saturday 23rd January.

4. Magdaléna Rybáriková preview
-------------------------------

Magdaléna Rybáriková is one of the most enjoyable tennis-players to watch. Of course it helps that she is an absolute stunner, but she is also very entertaining in tennis-terms. In many ways, she is a throwback to a bygone era with her excellent volleys, one-handed sliced backhands and dropshots. Yet she has upgraded that model to the modern era with a big serve and groundstrokes of flairsome power, with which she likes to go for the lines. She hits plenty of brilliant winners, especially off her forehand!

In 2009, Magda cemented her position on the WTA Tour with a solid season in which she went 32:26 in singles and rose from #58 to #46 in the rankings, highlighted by her first WTA singles-title at Birmingham, where she scored six consecutive wins including world #16 Zheng,Jie 7-6 6-4 in the third round and #20 Li,Na 6-0 7-6 in the final.

Magda was also a semi-finalist at Hobart 2009, beating world #13 Flavia Pennetta 7-5 6-3 in the second round, and a semi-finalist of Pattaya City with a 6-4 6-1 quarter-final thrashing of #12 Caroline Wozniacki - sweet revenge for the Wimbledon 2006 Girls' Singles final!

A shoulder-injury halted Magda's momentum after winning Birmingham; her next highlight was winning five matches to reach the quarter-finals of New Haven as a qualifier, beating #27 Francesca Schiavone in the first round, and #14 Marion Bartoli - albeit by retirement - in the second round. She reached the third round of the US Open, the quarter-finals of Seoul and Tokyo (beating #13 Nadia Petrova 6-2 6-2 in the second round of Tokyo), and qualified for the International season-ending championships at Bali.

Magda started 2010 with an impressive 6-2 6-3 win over world #27 Anabel Medina Garrigues at Auckland, but followed that with two dismal losses. She lost 6-1 6-0 to #30 Shahar Pe'er, and admitted that she was distracted by a political protest so noisy that there was a 15-minute delay between sets as the officials debated whether to continue. Magda then went down tamely to #34 Aleksandra Wozniak in the first round of Hobart: 6-3 6-1.

4.1 First-round preview
-----------------------

* Magdaléna Rybáriková [EF] v DINARA SAFINA [2]

This is, of course, a very tough draw against the world #2, who spent much of 2009 ranked #1 despite never having won a Major. Their only previous meeting came in the second round of the French Open 2008: Safina won 6-0 6-1, so Magda's first objective is to prove how far she's come since then.

Safina is a real bully on the court: tall and muscular, she has powerful groundstrokes, and loves to psyche out her opponents with her in-your-face body-language.

The most important thing to remember when playing Safina is that it's never over until it's over - at the French Open 2008, she came back from a set, 2-5 and match-point down against both Maria Sharapova in the fourth round and Elena Dementieva in the quarter-finals, en route to her first Major final.

Safina reached her second Major final at the Australian Open 2009, beating world #7 Vera Zvonarëva 6-3 7-6 in the semi-finals, but being crushed 6-0 6-3 by #2 Serena Williams in the final.

Safina won the Premier titles at Rome and Madrid, and reached her third Major final at the French Open 2009, winning her first four matches for the loss of just five games before beating #9 Victoria Azarenka 1-6 6-4 6-2, and #19 Dominika Cibulková 6-3 6-3. But she froze in the final, handing #7 Svetlana Kuznetsova an easy 6-4 6-2 victory.

Safina reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon, but defending champion Venus Williams made a mockery of Safina's #1 ranking by crushing her 6-1 6-0. Safina then won the International title at Portorož, and was runner-up at Cincinnati.

But then began a terrible run of form for Safina, from which she has yet to break free. She lost to #72 Petra Kvitová in the third round of the US Open - between first-round losses at Toronto and Tokyo. She lost to #226 Zhang,Shuai in the second round of Beijing, and retired from the season-ending championships at Doha with a back-injury so serious that she pulled out of Brisbane 2010 about a month in advance.

Safina started her 2010 singles-campaign with a pretty impressive 7-5 6-4 win over world #10 Agnieszka Radwańska at Sydney (after going 0-5 down in the first set), but was trounced 6-2 6-3 by #5 Elena Dementieva in the quarter-finals.

Magda has to forget about her own recent losses, and remember how bad the last few months have been for Safina, how underprepared Safina is, and how much pressure Safina will be under as she defends her final and tries to get the monkey off her back of having never won a Major.

-----------------------------------------------------

- Magdaléna Rybáriková [EF] lt. DINARA SAFINA [2], 4-6 4-6

A respectable result for Magda, as my first concern was for her not to be humiliated. So even though I can't stand Safina, I'm pleased that Magda achieved a much closer scoreline against a much higher-ranked opponent than her two previous losses this year.

Both sets followed the pattern that Magda was broken, broke back later, but was broken again immediately.

The first set could have been different if Magda had converted a break-point at 2-1*, or one of two break-points at 4-5*.

The second set could have been different if Magda had converted a break-point at 3-4*.

----------

Safina was the more aggressive player, with a W:UE ratio of 25:39 to Magda's 16:28.

Both players got 65% of their first serves in. Magda won 57% of the points when she did so, and 48% on second serve; the corresponding winning-percentages for Safina were 74% and 36%.

Magda's first serve was faster than Safina's: fastest 111-106 mph, average 99-99 mph (Magda's was slightly faster). Safina had much the faster average second serve, though: 87-80 mph.

Magda served one ace and 3 double faults, Safina 2 aces and 9 double faults.

They each had 6 BPs, but Magda only broke twice, Safina four times.

Magda won 10 of 12 points at the net (83%), while Safina won 13 of 17 (76%). I wish Magda could have got there more often, because she has the most beautiful net-game of my Eternal Fanship.

In points, Safina won 73-63.

Safina off to an ideal start (Vanessa Skendaris, www.australianopen.com)
>>>
World No.2 Dinara Safina advanced to the second round of the Australian Open 2010, defeating Magdaléna Rybáriková of Slovakia in a tough 6-4 6-4 encounter at Hisense Arena on Monday.

Safina - last year's finalist - looked shaky in her first-round clash. She had 21 unforced errors and five double faults in the opening set alone, but was able to prevail.

Once her nerves settled, Safina managed to secure the first break of the set. She hit a crosscourt backhand winner, passing Rybáriková at the net to jump to a *3-2 lead.

The 21-year-old Slovakian quickly answered, breaking Safina's serve in the next game. Safina then started to find her game, hitting powerful shots from the baseline. She managed to break back, snatching a *5-4 lead, and eventually closing out the set with a crosscourt forehand winner in 47 minutes.

A fired up Safina brought her momentum through to the second set, jumping to a 3-1 lead, but Rybáriková did not back down. She levelled the set at 3-3 after Safina handed her a break with her third double fault of the set.

Safina responded, snatching a break in the next game. Despite working Safina hard, Rybáriková failed to capitalise on several break-point opportunities. She had a chance to break the Russian's serve to level the set at 4-4, but Safina answered with a 153km/h (95mph) ace down the middle.

The victory was Safina's second straight-sets win over Rybáriková.

A Russian into the second round was 2009 runner-up Dinara Safina, who had a 6-4 6-4 win over Magdaléna Rybáriková of Slovakia in the first match completed on a rainy day at Melbourne Park. The second-seeded Safina lost the final to Serena Williams last year.

Safina was erratic at times, but had no serious problems handling the No.47-ranked Rybáriková in her second tournament since a back-problem forced her out of the season-ending championship in October.

"I had some good moments and bad moments, but overall I'm happy I went through, and I'm pretty satisfied with everything," Safina said.

"It was a solid game by me. Just from this, I can start to build up much more confidence, and using more my shots," she said.

Safina played on one of the two covered courts at Melbourne Park. Matches on outside courts were delayed 45 minutes by rain, and others were later suspended by showers - a change to the heat that usually confronts players at the first Major tournament of the season.

With the exception of Maria Sharapova, the leading Russian women all advanced safely, with Safina and Kuznetsova both sailing through their first matches.

Safina - runner-up in Melbourne last year - defeated Slovakia's Magdaléna Rybáriková 6-4 6-4, despite still trying to rebuild her fitness after suffering back-pain late last year.

"I had some good moments and bad moments, but overall I'm happy I went through," she said.

"At the end of the last year, I was tired, exhausted, like I had no more fun on the court. But now I feel like I'm back and I'm enjoying every moment."

* Safina overcomes rusty performance to advance.
* Confident back-injury healed.

Dinara Safina overcame a rusty performance to advance to the second round of the Australian Open on Monday - just a couple of months after fearing that she might not be able to play at Melbourne Park.

Safina, last year's beaten finalist, committed nine double faults and 39 unforced errors before eventually beating a dogged Magdaléna Rybáriková 6-4 6-4 in the first match on Hisense Arena.

The 23-year-old Safina, who missed the season-ending Tour Championships last October with a back-injury, was nevertheless happy with her performance, and felt that her game would improve as the tournament went on.

"Let's say it was not an easy first-round match. She's a very good opponent. She plays very good," the second seed said.

"I can start to build up much more confidence, and using more my shots. I had some good moments and bad moments, but overall I'm happy I went through, and I'm pretty satisfied with everything."

Safina beat Rybáriková 6-0 6-1 the last time they met - at Roland Garros in 2008 - but found the Slovak much more of a difficult opponent on Monday, as she struggled with her timing whilst attempting to force her shots.

The back-injury, which plagued her for the final three months of last season, at one stage had her thinking that she might have to skip the first Major of 2010.

"[But] I spoke with my doctor back in Germany: he told me for Australian Open, for sure I'm going to be hundred percent," Safina told reporters.

"[i] was doubting the tournaments before, but my recovery went pretty fast, and I was even ready for Sydney [last week]."

Having been reprieved, the former world number-one was even starting to enjoy her tennis again.

"At the end of the last year, I was tired, exhausted, like I had no more fun on the court," she added. "But now I feel like I'm back, and I'm enjoying every moment on the court.

"Last year, I was every time like pushing myself, like, 'Okay, I have to do it.' But now I do it with much more desire."

Magda plays Tamarine Tanasugarn in Kuala Lumpur in the first round. Tammy is in great form and I don't see Magda winning this one Hope she surprises me Goo Magda

In Indian Wells Magdalena has drawn Justine in the first round. Awfully tough, but I guess someone had to draw her.

Broken to 15 in the first game. I won't be able to stick around, but that start doesn't bode well.
