The inaugural US$200,000 PTT Thailand Open professional women's tennis tournament, which is being staged at the Rama Gardens Hotel, Bangkok from 08 – 16 October has attracted the two most exciting teenagers on the WTA Tour

H.E. Suwat Liptapanlop, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand presiding over the press conference to announce details of the tournament revealed that “ Sania Mirza, the 18 year-old Indian starlet who has shot up the rankings this year and 16 year old Nicole Vaidisova, who with the looks and the game has been billed as the “New Sharapova” will both be competing in Bangkok next month. He added “Vaidisova at the age of 15 last year captured 2 WTA titles and this year she has risen to no 27 in the world, despite being allowed to play only a limited number of tournaments due to her age. Mirza too has made fantastic strides, starting the year at no 2 0 6, she won her home tournament in Hyderabad and has moved up to no 43 in the rankings and has gained the status of a superstar in India .” Both players showed their tremendous potential by reaching the last 16 of the US Open this week.”

Mr. Chaiyapak Siriwat, Chairman of the Organising Committee added “It is great to have these two teenagers coming to compete in Thailand, they will add excitement to the event which already has such great players as World No 9 Nadia Petrova, Conchita Martinez and other rising stars as 20 year old Argentinian Gisella Dulko and our Fed Cup pair of Tamarine Tanasugarn and Suchanan Viratprasert.”

The PTT Thailand Open is the largest professional sporting event for women in Thailand and will be held over nine days at the newly completed tennis complex at the Rama Gardens Hotel in Bangkok .

The facility has a centre court with a capacity for 4,000 spectators with additional grandstand seating on the other two match courts.

The Qualifying rounds will be held on the 8 – 10 October with play commencing at 10.00. Main draw matches will start from the 10 October with play starting from 15.00 daily, including the finals on Sunday 16 October.

Come Ocotober, it’ll be Sania mania

Published on September 08, 2005

[TENNIS] Indian sensation Sania Mirza will be one of the star attractions in the inaugural WTA Thailand Open which will take place from October 10 to 16 at the Rama Garden Hotel in Bangkok. The up-and-coming teenager, who caused ripples in the ongoing US Open by reaching the fourth round, will be eyeing her second WTA title after wresting her maiden crown in front of the home crowd in Hyderabad in February.

Ranked 42 in the world, the most successful female player from India will lead the Asian challenge in the US$200,000 tournament, which features big names such as world No 9 Nadia Petrova of Russia and 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, who will be seeking her second title in the Kingdom after winning the Volvo Women’s Open in Pattaya in February.

Apart from the trio, two other top 30 players – No 28 Nocole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic and Argentine rising star Gisela Dulko, No 29 in the world, will be here.

Pentangle Promotion, the organisers of the tournament, are trying hard to rope in Mary Pierce, the Frenchwoman who upset former champion Justine Henin-Hardenne in the US Open fourth round two days ago.

But according to the new WTA rules which will be effective after the US Open, top 20 players including the 12th-ranked Pierce, need not confirm their participation until two days before the tournament. Fans can watch the tournament from October 10-16 on UBC and the last three days on Channel 7. Tickets priced between Bt300 and Bt1,500 are available at (02) 381 8703-4 and (02) 382 3491-3, or can be bought by visiting the website at www.pentanglepromotions.com.

Besides the players from Europe and the USA, led by World No 9 Nadia Petrova and 16 year old sensation Nicole Vaidisova, who won in Korea last week there is a large contingent of Asian players taking part including India starlet Sania Mirza. Japan has the mostplayers taking part in the tournament, their assault is being led by Japanese No 1 Shinobu Asagoe, who is currently ranked no 32 and recently reached the quarter-final stage of the China Open before falling to world no 1, Maria Sharapova.
