Post Sisters Act: Clash of the Deities

Early Collision of the Magnificent Williams

Having won their respective third round matches the Williams sisters will have an early clash at the fourth round of 2005 US Open. The battle between the sisters will take place on Monday after Venus defeated Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) 6-3 6-3 an hour after Serena ended Francesca Schiavone (ITA) dreams 6-3 6-4.

The most shining sisters on the WTA Tour have never met in such an early stage of a tournament after their first meeting at the second round of 1998 Australian Open. The next matches of the Williams took place in eight finals, three semifinals, and two quarterfinals.

There were 13 matches in which Venus and Serena had to play each other. Serena leads their head to heads by one feat. Venus won their first three encounters, but Serena defeated her older sister in six consecutive matches during 2002 to 2003. After surviving abdominal strain of which she had been suffering for years, Venus finally managed to control her sister at their last battle at the Nasdaq-100 in Miami, April this year.

Serena was the first Williams who won the US Open title in 1999 by defeating Martina Hingis and Venus was a back to back champion here in 2000 and 2001. The Williams reigned at the US Open for four consecutive years with the success of Serena in the 2002 final. The 2001 and 2002 finals were all Williams’ shows. While battling with injuries, they missed the 2003 competition at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Last year, the sisters could not move to the throne since they were still in a recovering condition (without prejudice to the aptitude of the elite players at that time).

It is unfortunate for the Williams to play each other at the round of 16 of this year US Open. The sisters could not avoid this early collision due to their ‘low’ rankings resulting from their lack of tournaments when suffering various injuries. Anyway, the show must go on. Williams Sisters Act will be one of the most memorable matches of this year last Grand Slam.

Serena took the first Grand Slam title this year at the Australian Open in January and Venus won Wimbledon title last July. If I have to predict the winner of this match, I would go with Venus. In terms of power and agility, Venus had shown her superiority when she outlasted Maria Sharapova (RUS) and Lindsay Davenport (USA) on Wimbledon grass court. On the other hand, Serena had not played any top ten players other than Venus since 2005 Australian Open and was forced to take early exits in Dubai, Paris, Amelia Island and Toronto. She even experienced a big upset at the third round of Wimbledon when playing mediocre compatriot, Jill Craybass in straight sets 3-6 6-7(4) two months after losing to Schiavone in two sets, 6-7(2) 1-6.

The Queen is in her best shape this year and is ready to again send her younger sister to the family box on the court side or to their lovely home where Serena could see on TV how Venus would fight younger contenders like Sharapova, Kim Clijster (BEL) and Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL), or the old crack yet powerful Davenport. Therefore, when the Sisters Act begins on Monday the crowd would sing “All Hail Queen Venus!”
