Re: Anna Smith Thread

Josanna?

"Glo-oo-o-oria.

Josanna in excelsis."

Tho what Gloria's got to do with it, idunno. Who's she?

Anna should fetch up with precisely 600 ranking points, curently tied for position 120. Her highest ever doubles ranking, IIRC, is 119. So a win in the semi would be doubly significant.

The criteria for making the US Open doubles main draw are very opaque; but they must surely be getting very close to making the cut.

Anyway, ding-dong merrily on high.

Re: Anna Smith Thread

Lost the final 1 & 1. Anna very nervous (though doubtless Raith--I have to have the courage of my own convictions as far as naming goes, haven't I?--were overmatched today in any case).

Wow, what the hell happened? I guess their opponents were just much better clay court players? But making a WTA final is a great step anyway.

Shame about the final result, but gives them something to work on!

Re: Anna Smith Thread

Didn't see that coming.

Still, in terms of ranking points (180), this is by far the best result for Anna and Joc since their injury breaks, and possibly before.

They should now be ranked 112 + 113 on Monday, dependent on results elsewhere, both now at new career-high rankings. As a team, they are approximately 25th on the "Road to Singapore" doubles leaderboard.

Anna now has a possible problem that her singles ranking (488) is not high enough to gain her entry to WTA 250k qualies, while many ITF tournaments would be almost a waste of time for her and Joss to enter...

Anybody know where and when they're playing next?

Anna and Joss won the Lexington 50K without dropping a set.

I guess that in the next little while, she will have to decide whether to try to pursue her singles career, or to concentrate solely on doubles. If she and Rae can maintain a ranking that will get them into slams, then her doubles career will be far more financially viable than her singles career ever has been.

She's earned more money playing doubles with Rae this year than her previous two seasons in singles combined. And you feel there is still so much more they can achieve. She's had some nice singles results since her 2012 comeback from injury, but nothing noteworthy in the grand scheme of things. I should think focusing on doubles would be a no brainier for her. That's not to say she cannot play some $10ks here and there if she feels like it, and there's always the odd doubles specialist playing WTA quailes on the off chance of a low cut off or late withdrawal.

Re: Anna Smith Thread

It's pretty clear that both of them need to stick to doubles for the moment… They've clearly got a very special partnership - the best British female partnership in my memory… and they are now able to get a lot of ranking points for just winning one match… their consistency has been such that I can see them making a lot of finals even at WTA level.

Re: Anna Smith Thread

I was thinking that perhaps we should have a thread devoted to their doubles team - it's pretty random whether we post here or in Rae's thread at the moment.

I agree, although if we do that, it almost guarantees they'll divorce...

Wow!They upset Black/Mirza in 4&3!Didn't see that coming.
By reaching the semi-finals, they move to the very edge of the WTA doubles top 100 :-)
