Women's Grand Slam Champions from Past Seven Years Headline 2005 US Open Field

7/20/05 9:40 PM

World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport Joined By Former Grand Slam Champions Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Myskina

Thirty Countries Represented in Singles Field

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 20, 2005 – The USTA today announced that women’s Grand Slam champions from the past seven years will headline the singles field for the 2005 US Open Tennis Championships. World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport will be joined by former Grand Slam champions Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Myskina at the US Open, which will be played Aug. 29 - Sept. 11 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

In all, 30 countries are represented on the entry list, which features the winners of the last seven US Open Championships and includes 98 of the top 100 ranked players. The US Open Women’s Singles Championship is presented by JPMorgan Chase. Both the men’s and women’s US Open singles champions will earn $1.1 million with the ability to earn up to $2.2 million based on their performances in the US Open Series. In addition, both US Open singles champions will receive a new 2006 Lexus GS 430 automobile.

Following Davenport on the entry list are 2004 Wimbledon champion Sharapova of Russia, currently No. 2 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings; No. 3 Amelie Mauresmo of France, runner-up at the 1999 Australian Open; and No. 4 Kuznetsova of Russia, the defending US Open champion.

The entry list features three Americans who have combined to win 15 Grand Slam women’s singles titles, including five of the last seven US Opens – Davenport of Newport Beach, Calif., who won the 1998 US Open; No. 6 Serena Williams of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., the reigning Australian Open champion and 1999 and 2002 US Open champion; and No. 9 Venus Williams of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., the reigning Wimbledon champion and 2000 and 2001 US Open champion.

The 2005 US Open Women’s Singles Championship will be telecast live Saturday, September 10, during prime time on CBS Sports for the fifth consecutive year. The US Open is the only Grand Slam tournament to present a women’s prime time final on network television.

Rounding out the top 10 entries are No. 5 Elena Dementieva of Russia, runner-up at the 2004 US Open; No. 7 Henin-Hardenne of Belgium, the 2003 US Open champion and reigning French Open champion; No. 8 Nadia Petrova of Russia, semifinalist this year at Roland Garros; and No. 10 Myskina of Russia, the 2004 French Open champion.

The 2005 US Open field includes two other former Grand Slam women’s singles champions: No. 13 Mary Pierce of France, the 1995 Australian Open and 2000 French Open champion; and No. 42 Conchita Martinez of Spain, the 1994 Wimbledon champion.

The United States and Russia each have 13 players who received direct entry into the 2005 US Open, leading all countries. The Czech Republic and France are tied for third with 10 entries each.

Other American women who have received direct entry into the 2005 US Open include: No. 51 ranked Lisa Raymond of Wayne, Pa.; No. 55 Amy Frazier of Rochester Hills, Mich.; No. 58 Jill Craybas of East Greenwich, R.I.; No. 59 Mashona Washington of Houston; No. 63 Laura Granville of Chicago; No. 65 Meghann Shaughnessy of Scottsdale, Ariz.; No. 74 Abigail Spears of San Diego; No. 89 Jamea Jackson of Atlanta; No. 96 Lindsay Lee-Waters of Dunwoody, Ga., and No. 97 Marissa Irvin of Santa Monica, Calif.

No. 105 Eva Birnerova of the Czech Republic was the 104th and last player accepted directly into the women’s field of 128 (Rita Grande of Italy entered with a protected ranking ). Sixteen more players will gain entry through the US Open Qualifying Tournament, August 23-26, while the remaining eight spots are wild card entries awarded by the USTA.

The only two women ranked in the top 100 not entered are No. 42 Jennifer Capriati and No. 87 Paola Suarez, who are both injured.

The July 18 edition of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings was used to determine the US Open main draw entry list. Seedings will be based on the August 22 rankings. The US Open draw will take place Wednesday, August 24.

The 2005 US Open is expected to attract over 625,000 fans, making it the highest attended annual sporting event in the world. More than 86 million viewers watched the 2004 US Open on CBS Sports and USA Network, and international broadcasts reached 199 countries. New fan enhancements at the 2005 tournament will feature a multi-million dollar upgrade of the USTA National Tennis Center grounds, including the opening of the US Open Court of Champions attraction, a renovated South Plaza, and the introduction of “US Open Blue” courts.

The 2005 US Open will be held Monday, August 29 through Sunday, September 11. Tickets for the 2005 US Open can be purchased four ways: 1) at usopen.org; 2) by calling Ticketmaster at 1-866-OPEN-TIX; 3) at all Ticketmaster outlets; or 4) at the USTA National Tennis Center box office. American Express is the Official Card of the US Open.

The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S. It owns and operates the US Open, the largest annually attended sporting event in the world and, in 2004, launched the US Open Series which links 10 summer tournaments to the US Open. In addition, it owns the 94 Pro Circuit events throughout the U.S., and selects the teams for the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Olympic and Paralympic Games. A not-for-profit organization with more than 665,000 members, it invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grassroots to the professional levels.

Shame about Krajicek...

This open will be good - I think there might be a few surprises this year.

err yeah - she's been injured since Rosmalen. She tore her meniscus in her right knee. It's pretty much healed, but she can't start to train for at least 2 more weeks, and she doesn't wanan come back too early!
