PYW Wimbledon - Second Round - Revote NOW | Dementieva v. Baltacha
PYW Wimbledon - The Championships
Welcome to the grounds of Wimbledon! Loads of people will be queueing every day to catch a glimpse of the hotly contested matches in this PYW Grand Slam, with a great amount of allure.
What's at stake? Besides one of the greatest titles, a great load of points can be racked up. And no one is assured of their position on the PYW rankings. Let's take a look at what points can be earned:
W - 650
F - 456
SF - 292
QF - 162
R16 - 90
R32 - 56
R64 - 32
R128 - 5
Qualifier - 10 *
Q3 - 5
Q2 - 2
Q1 - 1
* If a qualifier loses in the first round, she gets no first round points as usual.
** Note that these points (R128, Qualifier, Q3, Q2 and Q1) are different from the official points, to make it fairer.
The first round provided few upsets, as most seeded players and PYW favourites survived. Surprising was the loss of Dutchwoman Michaëlla Krajicek to Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg. Krajicek, who just won her first ever title in Rosmalen, rapidly won the first set, before collapsing completely in the second. She refound her rhythm in the final set, but bowed out in the tie-break.
The clash between Evgenia Linetskaya and Daniela Hantuchova brought us the excitement we had all been waiting for. The first set was close, but Hantuchova survived. Linetskaya breezed past the Slovakian in the second set and seemed to be go on to win the match. But it was just then when Hantuchova fought back and played her best to not only fight off Linetskaya, but also Dementieva, who is eager for the #1 position.
Dark horses Nicole Vaidisova (against Jelena Kostanic) and Maria Sharapova (against Nuria Llagostera Vives) surprisingly had great problems fighting off their opponents, but survived nonetheless.
Let's see if all the remaining seeds and favourites can survive another round. It is up to you.
