I knew some didn't look in proportion when I made them - I was only using photoshop for the 2nd time and was kind of rushing and messing about with cropping while making them I actually think my first ones looked better than these
I think I know what you mean but when I do CTRL+T nothing happens/appears though there is a bar already at the top saying 100% so thats probably why. But doesn't that just make the image zoom out and nothing actually changes if you save it?

Nope, the 100% thing makes it bigger/smaller. Just change it, and when you are done just click the any tool on the panel (pretty sure you can click any tool, or that first point tool) then it'll ask if you want to apply or discard, if you apply then it'll change.

But even if you do that you still don't get a perfect size to make an avatar, and when I looked at the image size it was still the same . I've also noticed doing that sometimes makes the image quality go down. IDK when you alter the image size it asks you if you want to constrain proportions - maybe I should do that but then I will still have to use crop tool quite alot.
Maybe you have a more up to date version of Photoshop? I am using CS4

Yeah thats the way I was doing it first, and yeah its at 100%. But do you resize it first then crop it or the other way around And is there any way you can crop it without estimating and getting the perfect avatar size?

I am using Photoshop CS4 as well, and I'm pretty sure that's the most up-to-date unless CS5 was released which I think it was if I'm not mistaken. But these versions do not make much difference anyway. Next time I get on, I'll take a picture and show you how I do it. I'll head to bed for now.

what i do is : resize so that either the width is 144 or the height is 168, then image > canvas size.

I think you can do it this way too. But for me it depends on the picture, sometimes I only want certain parts of the image to show in the avatar. If you do it this way you can see almost, or sometimes everything, in the original picture -- depending on the size of the picture.

Oh I was trying to crop the image to the right proportions by estimating before and then resize it to avatar size but I guess it didn't really work that way. Next time I will try it your way and hopefully they will look better. I'm still not really used to photoshop just now so thats probably the main problem. Thanks for your help
