TMJ Problems. Anyone else had a bite splint?

As of yesterday I have been given a bite splint to wear to realign my jaw, which had apparently fallen out of sync, due to a slipped disc on the right side.

I'm still struggling to get used to it (I know, early days!) but eating's a nightmare. I can barely consider anything solid and I don't much fancy the thought of liquids for 4 months.

Has anyone ever had any experience of this kind of thing? And if so, does it get easier? The people who fitted it gave me no impression it'd be this tricky and I'm feeling quite low about it. My whole face has changed and my speech is affected by it. OK, yes, I'm feeling sorry for myself. And yes, I've had all those little comments about my oral capacity.

So, if nothing else, if I am unable to chew for a few months, can anyone suggest anything other than meal replacement drinks, porridge and soup?

I have a TMJ problem. One day like 15 years ago I was laying down with the side of my face on a pillow and my jaw popped out of place and locked. I had to go to the emergency room to get it unlocked but it didn't hurt. Ever since then I have had the TMJ problem and my jaw sort of dislocates itself and clicks if I open my mouth too wide. No pain though. The oral surgeon said there was nothing they could do without surgery so I just live with it. I don't even notice it.
