Catalina Castaño puso de gala al tenis colombiano

En bluyines, camisa ligera -pese al frío capitalino-, chaqueta, tenis cafés y con el cabello suelto y poco maquillaje en su rostro, pero a las carreras, asumió ayer Catalina Castaño una sesión fotográfica en estudio con la mayor naturalidad y sencillez posible antes de ser proclamada tenista del año en Colombia.

La número uno del país -quien llegó de Lima, donde prepara su próxima temporada- se mostró satisfecha con los resultados de 2005, habló del momento político del país, del presidente Ávaro Uribe Vélez, de Juanes, Shakira y, obviamente, de las fiestas de fin de año que, a duras penas, tendrá la posibilidad de sacarles una semana porque todo apunta al Abierto de Australia, como su primer gran torneo del 2006.

¿Qué sabor le dejó la temporada 2005?
"Todo fue muy positivo. Haber terminado 55 en el casillero después de haber empezado de 120 es algo muy bueno".

¿Cree que pudo ser mejor?
"De pronto sí. Siempre queda el sabor de haber realizado un mejor torneo, o una que otra ronda, pero pienso que fue más positivo que otra cosa".

¿De esos objetivos trazados cuáles pudo cumplir?
"Al principio de la temporada se trabajó para estar entre las 50. Terminé de 55, ahí muy cerca. Puedo decir que cumplí en ese sentido".

¿Y cuáles falló?
"Pude llegar más lejos en el Roland Garros. O en otros torneos en los que pensaba podría lograrlo y no se pudo como en Marruecos, Turquía y Estocolmo, abiertos en los que pensé me podría ir mejor".

Al hacer un balance, el trabajo que usted adelantó con el técnico Pablo Giacopelli fue determinante, pero ¿cuál cree que fue ese factor decisivo que la lanzó definitivamente en el circuito femenino?
"Él influyó demasiado en mi juego y mis resultados. Ayudó bastante, me cambió algunas cosas de juego, como el servicio y la movilidad en la cancha, dos cosas que son importantes a la hora de ganar partidos y subir en el ranking".

Antes no le daba importancia al saque, ahora lo ha mejorado y ha sido crucial para medirse de tú a tú a las más grandes...
"Así es. Antes lo venía como parte de un partido pero no lo consideraba como un arma. A Pablo le agradezco eso, así como el haber explotado en mí el aspecto físico para tener una gran movilidad en la cancha".

Y ahora, entonces, ¿qué debe mejorar para seguir en ascenso?
"Lo que llamamos el ritmo de cancha. Hay que trabajar mucho para obtener mejores resultados en cada partido".

¿Cuál fue su partido más gratificante del año?
"Muchos me llenaron. Podría destacar las victorias sobre Gisela Dulko, en Seúl; ante Paola Suárez y Patty Schnyder, ambas en Miami. Pero, en general me siento satisfecha. En el tenis esto es diferente. Todos los juegos son gratificantes. Uno no gana ni pierde de la misma forma. Así haya ganado a una que sobre el papel era fácil me siento contenta. Vencer a Paola Suárez fue emocionante. Hay momentos en los que se sale bien y ese fue uno de esos".

¿Y el peor momento?
"Cuando me enfrenté con Serena Williams (US Open). Pienso que pude hacer un mejor papel e incluso haberle podido ganar. Fue un partido agradable pero técnicamente malo".

La salida de Fabiola la deja a usted sosteniendo la bandera de Colombia. ¿Es muy pesado sentirse con esa obligación en un cirtuito tan complicado?
"No. Todos trabajamos para ser número uno en nuestros países. Yo siempre quise serlo. Y ahora me siento contenta. Es una responsabilidad grande pero no como para pensar que se me vino el mundo encima".

El próximo año tendrá mucha actividad. ¿Estará con el equipo de Colombia a la Fed Cup?
"Aún no sé lo del equipo colombiano. Eso lo tengo que hablar con la Federación, pero me gustaría porque a mi me llena todo lo que signifique representar bien al país".

A propósito del país, ¿cómo ve la situación actual?
"Muy bien. Cuando viajo me puedo dar cuenta que la gente tiene otra imagen de Colombia. El presidente Uribe ha hecho un buen trabajo en el aspecto de recuperar el país. Hemos mejorado, a pesar de los problemas. Hay que reconocer que éste no es un país fácil de gobernar, pero en términos generales ha cambiado mucho".

¿Votaría por la reelección de Uribe?
"Sí, sin pensarlo dos veces. Por lo que él ha hecho, estoy contenta. Eso de devolverle la paz a un país es una tarea bien complicada cuando se habla de guerrilla, paramilitares y narcotráfico. Él lo intentó y la fórmula le está saliendo".

Usted, al lado de Juanes y Shakira, es embajadora del país. ¿Musicalmente con quién se queda: Juanes o Shakira?
"Son dos artistas muy cotizados a nivel mundial. Juanes me encanta como persona y como se entrega al público. Y Shakira es un caso aparte porque ha podido llevar la música a muchos países del mundo. En Japón, por ejemplo, me extrañé al escuchar su música en varias emisoras.

Llega la Navidad y para una persona tan religiosa como usted, ¿qué significa esta época?
"Navidad me trae recuerdos muy bonitos. Navidad es una palabra que habla de comida en familia, de cuentos, de luces, de pasarla bien y de recordar el nacimiento de Jesús".
