Hello Everyone. I am creating this thread because Miss Li has been a new star here, and I would love to tell you some little things about Chinese culture, when we type or read the other's name, we always do the family name first. Otherwise, it would be a bit weird.

I know that it is supposed to be last name first, but I like saying all names from around the world the same so I guess I write Na Li because its how most cultures have it.
I have a Chinese name too but I write it the Western way with surname last bc its easier to avoid confusion.

Thanks for this topic; As China's culture, "Lina" is the correctly, but "Nali" is also welcomed;

I'd prefer Li Na too.
I'm Chinese myself, and the first time I saw Na Li, I got confused and thought her surname was Na... which was strange because Na is not actually a very common surname

Should We say Li Na or Na Li?
just depends on how culturely correct We wish to be
if We did it to those coming from the west
would they take it as a jest?

Would Capriati Jennifer take a name switch in Her stride
or would it it insult Her family pride?
how would that one go?
specially with grumpy old Stefano

We could call call Masha Sharapova Maria
now that would sound a little bit queer
Yuri would become an even more angry man
and may stick His own Head in a nearby trash can

Europeans visited China many years ago
to show them the correct way to go
the said "Listen here You Chinese chap
We won't have this back the front name calling crap!"

They aways jumped boots first into a nation
that beat them by thousands of years to have civilisation

I think I'll stick down here in the south Pacific
where Our needs aren't quite so specific
a beautiful woolly Lady We call a Ewe
I think that can be reversed ,don't You?
and They are often heard calling each other Baa Baa
well We can put either name in front ,so there You are!

I tend to get confused, last names and first names sound similar to me, so I find it hard to distinguish which is the family name... Last year one of my chinese friends explained to me that calling someone by their family name was the right thing to do, so for example, in the case of Li Na, calling her Na would be too familiar, only good friends and family would call her Na, everyone else would just call her Li, or Li Na, is that right?
