Say Hello Wave Goodbye 2004
Here is a thread dedicated to those players we have said hello and to those who we have said goodbye to on the tour this year. This is going to be continually added to when members come up with players they think should deserve a mention.......
We have said a big Hello to:
Tatiana Golovin - the 16 year old french star who we made a big spash at the Australian Open where she tore through the draw to make R4 beating Anna Pistolesi and Lina Krasnoroutskya. Since then she has got to the final of Birmingham and made a fourth round appearance at Wimbledon. Currently ranked #27 she is sure to be seeded for the first slam of next year.
Nicole Vaidisova - Currently ranked #77 this girl won her first ever professional tournament as a qualifier of the $10k event in Plzen in her own country. Since then she got to the $75k event in Midland where she lost to Jill Craybas. For her feat she was given entry to Acapulco where she beat #2 seed Asagoe for her first main WTA win. However her big wins this year were her first two WTA titles - in Vancouver and in Tashkent. For only 15 this girl is going to make a big splash if her devut year on the WTA is anything to go by.
Anna Tchakvetadze - Currently ranked inside the Top100, this was the girl who beat Myskina at the US Open. She has one ITF title to her name (Redbridge) which she won as a qualifer. This girl is safe for direct entry to low tour events so expect her to make a splash.
Sesil Karatancheva - the Bulgarian star is ranked at 127 and played the infamous match against Maria Sharapova where the claws were out on court. She claimed she could win the US Open. She hasn't done this yet but she has qualified for four WTA events this year. Her best result being quarter finals in Vancouver and Quebec City [Tier 3]. Only 15 she is still far from being full time on the tour but she has shown us what is to come.
Ana Ivanovic Started off this year with 3 straight tournament wins on
the ITF tour all as qualifiers. She added two more ITF wins in the later part of the year. Her biggest WTA acheivement was a QF appearance in Luxembourg. Ana is now ranked inside the Top100 so expect to see a lot more of her this year.
We have said Goodbye to this year:
Iva Majoli - The French Open winner of 1997 who retired this year. The WTA gave her a ceremony in LA at the YEC. She played little this year, relying on WCs to get into events. She was ranked #4 in the world at one time and leaves the tour with 8 singles titles and 1 doubles.
Amanda Coetzer - The South African beauty retired this year in February. She claimed 18 WTA titles in all - 9 singles and 9 doubles. Her highest rank was no.3. Her best grand slam showing was a semi-final appearance at AusOpen and Roland Garros.

She's there but it's not mentioned het Tier I 3rd round and the QF of the Tier III. But well, hello to the new commers and bue to Iva and the others.

I made some sarcastic remarks when Sesil boasted about winning the USO and then lost at 1st round. But looking back, she lost that 1st round match to eventual winner Kuznetsova so it might have been a matter of luck. Her latest performances in smaller tournaments have restored my faith.

We also have said goodbye to Patricia Tarabini.  I'm so glad se got to finish her career with an Olympic medal!  |
