That's not saying much - but mostly it's not saying that Mom is anywhere near qualified to coach her.

Out of curiosity, do you have an alternate theory?

I don't understand the ranking at all! Mary has been around the 27-30 mark for the last year and doesn't seem to move up when she's doing well or down when she has one of her compulsary first round defeats!! She was seeded 24 at Wimbledon but since then has had a good run at the Olympics and US Open but is still 27!

I don't think I'll ever get it.........

Only if you listen to TBE. And I know, he has been pestering all of us about this Lina for years now, but if you think about it, I don't think she's shown any remarkable results? Aside from that time she beat Kim in Canada, has she taken out anyone else good? (And no, beating Arantxa after 2000 does not count )

I always thought Lina had major talent. She's had some pretty nasty injuries to deal with. She beat Sprem at the beginning of 2004 and there's no telling what she could have accomplished in the past if she hadn't been injured.

What else am i gonna say, i have faith in her, still do.
Lina's talent is there, she's the most talented Russian IMO but whether she comes back again is another matter
whole career been ruined by serious injuries and illness.

Was good to see her back last yr coming back after 2002 horror injury, then a bad shoulder injury at end of yr, not to mention liver damage.
That even took me and her a little by suprise, she wasn't fit at start of last yr, even with her progress up ranks, she was a step slower than before her injury in 2002.

This Saturday was due to be her "big day" but thats no more with the passing away of her father-in-law to be .
She's not playing again until next yr now, if she feels like coming back.

Yeah.
1) She made the top 20 when she was as slender as she's ever been. Well, in as good a shape as she's ever been. Alex has never been 'slender' in the past five years.

2) Going deep into one slam ISN'T necesarily a big deal. See Clarisa Fernandez. And much as I'd like to see it, I don't think Shinobu Asagoe is gonna light up the tour.

3) She really is all power. Alex, at least the last time I got to see her, hammers EVERYTHING she can get half a swing at. That's great if you brought your 'A' game. But when you're as overweight as Alex usually is, your 'A' game never lasts more than half a set.

4) The tour has done nothing but adjust to power tennis for the last four years. Ever since Serena won the US Open in 1999. There is NO power player who's unbeatable now. The good power players try to mix in some variety. The players with less power know how to foil power as best they can. It is true that Sharapova won WB basically with nothing but power.
But that was grass, a surface which maximizes velocity. And a surface with a GS, a Tier II, and a couple Tier III's a year. That appraoch won't work on clay or hardcourts or Rebound Ace or carpet.

Alexandre Stevenson is probably the LEAST diverse big hitter in the game. When last seen, she brought NOTHING else to the table. No conditioning, no footspeed, so spins and no tactics. The tour has had four years to learn how to defeat that.

5) Her mother isn't an idiot. She was a sportswriter. She knows there is more to sports than hitting hard. That doesn't mean Alex listens.

Par example, the coaches of Elena Dementieva and Venus Williams have told them to improve their second serves. Players don't always do what's needed.

Ever since her win at junior Wimbledon Lina is one of my favourite players and I'm sure she'll prove herself very soon.

I don't think I'll ever get it.........
You have to look at who is in front of her. Practically all of them are doing better than they had been of late - true of Amy Nathalie and Chanda. The two players at the bottom of the top 20 also show you something in that they were both higher ranked in 2004 but have been passed at least for now by a returning Bovina and an arriving spremmobile.

Players around Mary are doing well. Top 20 is crowding out with some players doing very well and moving on up. Remember too where Sveta was at the start of 2004 she has pushed an awful lot of people back one in the rankings just on her own. Sveta isn't the only player on a run upwards at present - others will come up from behind Mary too - watch Golovin.

I can't remember where I read it, but it said Alex had a recurring shoulder injury that would need to be operated on eventually (maybe during the off season perhaps?).

Hantuchova is still a surprise to me. I don't think she can make it back to the Top 10. Look at all the girls in the Top 10. Faster, much faster, than her (inc Lindsay).

hingis' mum coached myriam casanova not mikaelian. myriam had the expectations more than mikaelian i think, but unfortunately she has a thyroid problem which has severely inhibited. funny that 108 and 109 are two very talented players troubled by injury.
