In that case it would be interesting to see her rankings for 1980 if anyone had them. We do have her lists for 79 and 81.

Does anyone have any top ten lists for 1982? John Barrett's are the only ones in this thread and he has a couple of questionable placements.

All contributions have been updated. A lot of thanks to Elegos7 and DavidK for the hard to find old rankings and Chris Whiteside, who's been the driving force behind this thread

1982 rankings added for World Tennis. Can anyone help with rankings from others for 1982? Tennis lists 4 or 5 because they do a composite ranking.

I think it was previously said that Judith Elian considered tournaments outside the Slams to be almost irrelevant. Even just taking the Slams (Morozova was finalist at RG and Wimby) it's still hard to see how she could rank #2.

Our erstwhile friend Bud Collins gave Morozova the #8 spot although he also put Hunt in his top 10. Suffice to say that none of the other Tennis correspondents of the day agreed with either of them.

Mdme Elian was also the only correspondent in the world who placed Evert ahead of Navratilova in 1979.

It's because rankings are subjective that make them so interesting. I have looked at some of Tingay's in amazement and said "b***ocks" but yet it has eventually transpired that Blaster Panel Members have agreed with him.

What justification could there possibly be for ranking Mandlikova ahead of Evert in 1985?

Let's see: Evert reached three Slam finals (FO, W, AO) to Mandlikova's one (USO), and they both won one Slam title each.

Grand Slam titles: Evert 1, Mandlikova 1
Grand Slam finals: Evert 3, Mandlikova 1
Grand Slam record: Evert W/F/SF/F, Mandlikova QF/3R/W/SF
Season record: Evert 79-8 (10 titles), Mandlikova 59-14 (3 titles)
Head-to-head: 2-2
Losses: Evert (4x Navratilova, 2x Mandlikova, Jordan, Garrison), Mandlikova (Rinaldi, Lindqvist, Bassett, 3x Navratilova, 2x Evert, 2x Garrison, 2x Kohde Kilsch, Karlsson, Smylie)

The only way to bump Mandlikova to #2 is if one buys the notion that the US Open is a bigger tournament than the French Open and that head-to-head in Grand Slam events is all that matters for ranking purposes.

Best left-right combination by a German (and that includes Max Schmeling): Steffi Graf. All she did in 1987 was knock Navratilova out of #1 and try to knock Evert out of the sport. (Mike Lupica in "The Best and Worst of Tennis in 1987", World Tennis)

"A couple of years ago, we nicknamed Steffi Graf's forehand 'Jaws'. And that music would go perfectly when she starts running in to the net, swarming on that little ball." (JoAnne Russell, during the 1988 Wimbledon final between Graf and Navratilova)

Re: World rankings

There were not computer rankings in '71, but here are the lists of those so-called experts of the times. Some didn't rank Evert because she played very little. Others placed her in the lower part of the top ten, partly because of her great USO run and good wins and partly because after #7 or 8 no one really had strong, consistent results for that year. Rino Tomassi, who is often way out of line with his rankings, place her at #3 ahead of Court which is totally assinine.
