1979

Summary

Martina Navratilova erased all doubts as to her #1 status in 1979. The serve and volleyer dominated the indoor season, winning the Avon Championships in Madison Square Garden before a record crowd. Opting to skip the revived clay clourt season, the ex-Czech lost a classic to Evert at Eastbourne, but once again won the biggest prize of all at Wimbledon. Navratilova swept aside both Austin and Evert in straight sets.

The second half of the year saw Martina dip a bit, but unlike 1978 she regained steam and won a series of events late in the year. When she utterly demolished Tracy Austin in the Colgate Championships Martina sat alone at the top. Her 7-6 record vs Austin and 5-3 record vs Evert left her with clear edges over her two nearest rivals.

Thanks to Preacherfan for compiling most of the results in the initial thread. Major thanks to Chaton for expanding the thread with full and detailed results for the major events.

----------------------------------------

Draw Notes:

The #5 seed (who ????) withdrew. Seeds 6-8 were moved up a notch. The ITF site has Blount as #5 (up from 6) seed, Doerner as #6 (up from 7), and Nagelsen as #7 (up from 8). LL-Hermansen is in the spot of the other seed.

----------------------------------------

Summary:

Poor prize money meant a poor field, despite hopes that some of the world's top ten women who came to Australia for Fed Cup in early December would stay. Evert and King left right after Fed Cup. Aussie Stars Turnbull, Reid, Fromholtz and Virginia Wade of Britain entered warm up events with prize money of $75,000 US, but skipped the Aussie Open itself, which only had $35,000 US and a top prize of $6,000. It was no way to go about attracting a quality entry. This was the weakest quality ever, with even most Australian women in America chasing the big bucks.

4 of the top 7 seeds fell in the first 3 days. Within minutes of each other the top 2 seeds were beaten in quarterfinals. A huge crowd formed as word spread that Evers was about to knock off tournament favorite Sue Barker. Sue clawed back from 3-5 down and had two set points in the tiebreak, but Diane "urged on by the crowd as daylight faded, unleashed 4 winners to clinch the win." Sue hadn't practiced before Melbourne, nursing a bad back from Fed Cup a couple weeks previous.

Finalist Betsy Nagelsen had come to Australia only because her coach Jim Fannin was coming with two of his male charges. Betsy was once a top prospect in 1974 before injuries set her back. She upset #2 seed Tomanova, who complained of partying too much on New Year's Eve and getting an early morning phone call from back home. Upon reaching the final over plucky 5 ft tall Matison, Nagelsen declared of her effort, "Not bad for someone nobody knows."

Coming through the carnage was Chris O'Neil, so unknown she wasn't among the top 20 Aussie women. She "shrugged off the embarrasment of a misspelt surname on center court" to become the dark horse champion of all time among Grand Slam champs.

Chris was the first unseeded champ of either gender in Oz in 20 years. Her computer ranking coming into the Open was 111. To this day she remains the last Australian, male or female , to win her nation's singles championship.

Whatever her rank, Chris can proudly say she is a Grand Slam champion.

Before a packed house of 5,00 Tracy routs Martina to announce her arrival at the top echelon of women’s tennis. Austin never drops serve, facing only 3 break points the entire match. Martina looked set to rally at 3-5 in the first, having 2 break points on Austins' serve. A missed backhand and an overhead error got Tracy back to deuce, then austin closed it out.

Martina afterwards, 'I wasbn't patient enough in the long rallies. Actually I did ok during the rallies, but then on the next point I didn't want to go through a long rally again, and I got impatient going for a winning shot."

Austin's test came in the QF vs Shriver. This was their first meeting as seniors, and Pammy's home town
connections (she hails from nearby Maryland) helped spur her on. When Shriver won the second set the crowd gave her a standing ovation. Austin quickly shot out ahwead in the third and never let go.

Richards overcome 1 match points at 3-5 down to upset Ruzici in the 1R. This was Renee's first event since undergoing surgery on her left foot in September. Anne Smith upset an erratic Betty Stove, who littered the stat sheet with missed volleys and serves.

Total attendance: 32,500.

Draw note: According to the AP Shriver is the #7 seed and Jausovec #8. For now I am going with the seeds from the WTA site.

Another early loss for Betty Stove, who will quickly fall out the top ten for good by mid-1979.

Martina's serve is like a juggernaut in the final, she loses only 5 points serving the entire match! It's Navratilova's 4th consecutive Houston win-sweet since she has settled in Dallas.

Wade: "Martina is the strongest player at the net. for power and speed. She has the best first volley around, and her serve is so tough it takes you a set to get used to it."

Navratilova has won 4 consecutive title in Houston-a run of 20 matches.

The match of the event was the QF tussle Martina had with Virginia Ruzici. "Vergie" was up a set 1-0, but Martina broke at 5-4 to win the second. "I had my chances", proclaimed the Rumanian after the 100 minute match.

Wade hit 7 aces in her semi win over Turnbull.

A stunning development as Greer Stevens trounces the ever-steady Chris Evert in round one. This is only the second time in Evert’s career that she has lost before the quarterfinals in any event. Even more remarkable is the routine straight-set nature of the win. From 3-2 Stevens reels off 6 consecutive games-making only 6 errors in that stretch. Chris on the shocker: "Greer played very well. She is a hit or miss player and tonight she wasn't missing anything." Stevens said: "Tonight I hit every forehand as hard as I could."

Sue Barker shows promise that ’79 will be an improvement over a dismal ’78 with an upset over Austin.

Stevens proves it’s no fluke as she dumps Fromholtz to win the event. Dianne serves two doubles faults at 3-3 in the last set. Greer's biggest win is "miraculous". The South African had knee surgery in 1978 requiring over 300 stitches and wears a mechanical knee-brace that leaves onlookers wondering how she can even move. Stevens decides to bank the money to save for her dream, a cow farm she plans to open with fiancee Ken Smith.

5,904 watch the final. Total Attendance: 28,800

Wade an early upset victim due to botching several volleys and Mima's all-court play. Reid almost followed, escaping Teeguarden, who served for the match at 5-4 in the third.

Austin overcomes her nemesis Reid for the first time in the semis. Kerry used clever drop shots; Austin's improved mobility and strength allowed her to do more than scurry up and merely get them back. Navratilova shows Tracy that she’s the player to beat by reversing the Washington result, reversing 3 straight defeats. Martina comes back from 1-3 in the first and 1-2 in the second to win in straights.

8,325 for the final-a total of 50,201 for the week.

*Top doubles seeds uncertain. Casals/Evert #1 or #2-Jausovec/Ruzici #1 or #2. Hunt/Walsh probable #4 seeds.

Thin on quality for a large event. Only Evert and Turnbull (seeded #3) in the top ten.

Richards upsets Wendy in the quarters and rolls on to her best result for a major event.

The grim struggle would have been a major breakthrough for Richards had she won. The promotor Boyd Browning (husband of Fancoise Durr) is said to have told Renee afterwards, "Renee, I don't know what would have happened had you won."

Draw note: the WTA site lists Tomanova as a default in the !R, but World Tennis gives a score.

Martina jumped out ahead 3-1 to open the final. Evert broke back twice "the momentum changed right there", she was say later. 8 straight games fell to Evert before Martina broke the spell trailing 0-3 in the second. "Martina started off so loose, and playing aggressivly, because she knows she has to play that way to beat me. But if she goes off her best then I'll take advantage of that."

The win vaults Evert back to the #1 spot on the computer. An added plus for Evert was getting revenge vs Stevens in the semis. Greer had upset her in the 1R at Hollywood. Chris took her apart in 49 minutes. Martina was equally effifient in thumping Tracy before a home crowd. "Why couldn't she have done it in another town and not with all my friends watrching?" the teen half-joked.

Marikova returned after 7 weeks off due to a knee injury.

7,024 saw the final. Total attendance=35,024

Draw note: The Tomanova-Mascarin result comes from the NYT and is listed as 1R match-but thi sis impossible, as Fromholtz d Tomanova in the 1R. The more likely scenario here is that the match was a qualifying match. Mascarin was from Michigan, so perhaps she was given a special wildcard for a shot at the main draw.

Wendy Turnbull trips Navratilova in the semis and wins the event. Casals upsets old rival Wade in a run of upsets. "I always fell I have an edge on her [Wade]". Casals then beat #5 seed Kiyomura and nearly got to the final-extending Ruzici to 3 all in the third set of their semi.

Ruzici led 5-3 and 6-5 in the last set of the final yet was never closer than 3 points from victory. Turnbul won despite an atrocious serving night-she spat out 12 double faults.

A big prize money event featuring a 64 draw, which explains why there is no $25,000 Futures event this week.

Win or lose Martina Navratilova came in on a high. Her 84 year old grandmother Andela Subertova is on a visit. This is first time Martina has seen anyone in her family since her defection in 1975. The Czech government allowed Subertova out because of her advance age. Martina still hasn't seen he parents in over 3 years.

Evert snuffs out 3 break points in serving for the first set at 5-4 vs hard hitting Barker. A rare volley winner put the seal on the first set for Chris. Wade served well in beating Fromholtz, no surprise, as that's her forte. Austin's 3 aces vs Tomanova were something else altogether. "That's usually my quota for several matches", Tracy beamed.

Navratilova couldn't have been more pleased in finally winning her hometown event. She is in devastating form in the final, losing only 1 point on serve in set 1 and 7 in the second set. Evert's only break came at 1-4 down in the second. "I passed her well, but she made some unbelievable gets" exclaimed Evert, who added that Martina was "unbeatable" and "hungrier than I was. Yuo could see it, the way she was jumping up and down. I don't know if it was becasue she had never wonhere, or maybe because her grandmother was here, and she got an emotional lift from that."

Earlier in the week Renee Richards was booed vs Casals. Stap replace Pam Shriver in the draw when the tall American came down with the flu.

10,125 see the final. The week's attendance was 59,225- a record for a women's only event.

Draw note: Per John Dolan's book the 1R May-Ruzici match was 4-4 retired-but the WTA draw, World Tennis and the New York Times all cite it as a default. The 4-4 retirement possibly Barker-Fromholtz. The NYT alludes to a retirement by Fromholtz, yet the WTA draw and World Tennis cite score as 7-6 6-4. Verify with a Philly based paper if possible.

The field is littered with the walking wounded. Ruzici defaults with a bad knee, Fromholtz possibly retires due to bad knee. Greer Stevens, whose knee operation in 1978 took 3000 stitches-is also hurt again. Even eventual winner Wendy Turnbull has a sore shoulder.

Kathy Jordan provides a huge upset in taking out Tracy Austin, the top seed and main draw for fans this year. Austin held serve only twice all match. No injury here-jusr poor play that in Tracy's opinion stunk. 'I had no feel for the ball today. I couldn't even keep the ball in play. Everybody has off days, and this is one of mine."

Pam Shriver chooses to turn pro at this event. After losing in the QF to Turnbull she said, "I must learn to control my emotions. I wanted to take my racquet and chuck it when things started going against me." After losing the first set 7-5 even a partisan crowd couldn't help her past the cagy Turnbull. Afterwards Wendy said, "I just kept running all the time. That's why they call me rabbit."

Greer Stevens comes in on a high-seeded #3. The bad news is her knee is hurting again. Virginia attacks constantly, ignoring an obviously injured Greer.

Casals looked set to make the final at 6-0 2-1 before dropping 6 straight games. Turnbull didn't win a game for 35 minutes. "I thought for a while that this was going to be the shortest match in history." After getting her first gasme Wendy's sore arm loosened up and she dug in. After leading 3-2 the Aussie won the second set. Wendy closed out a tense final set 6-3 by using an arsenal of dinks and lobs. This is Casals last singles semi in an important event as she transitioned to becoming mainly a doubles specialist.

Sue and Virginia's semi was another fluctuating affair. Wade led 4-0 in the third set when Barker came back to almost tie it. Barker netted a forehand to make it 5-3 Wade. A fired up Virginai closed it out over a tiring Barker.

Wade captures the first set of the final after saving 2 set points at 4-5 on her serve. 2 aces put an exclamation point on the first set. One more set and the Englishwoman would have her first singles title in months. The bubble bursts at 2-0 in the second though, as a tired Ginny (her doubles the night before ended at 1:40 AM) ran out of gas. "it was my intention to tie her out", Turnbull said. "I tried to slow the pace down, especially on her backhand."

Wade: "Of course I was tired, having played 6 sets yesterday and my doubles match lasting until early morning. But that's not an excuse. I simply was not able to concentrate on my game."

Total attendance=22,296-the lowest on the circuit this year. As a result the event is cancelled-not appearing again until 1991.

WTT is no more. With more teams dropping out by the day the grand experiment called World Team Tennis (1974-1978) is dead. Once the Europeans decided to throw money into the Colgate women's tour and rejuvenate the French the exodus began-with Chris Evert, still the #1 draw in tennis, deciding not to renew her contract.

’78 was a down year for both Fromholtz and Barker and they rebound to meet in a big Avon final. Barker’s only career win over Evert, and an importqnt one, as making the final earned her enough points to qualify for the Avon finale event in Madison Square Garden.

Barker comes out and flattens a flat Evert in the QF. Sue had never beaten Chris before. Evert may have had other matters on her mind as her marriage to John Lloyd nears. Edy McGoldrick organized a bridal shower for Chris that lasted five hours. "My heart wasn't in it."

Nome of that mattered to Barker, who stared, "I consider this my greatest win because I have beaten everyone else."

Casals and Wade had contentious match. Wade strongly argues a call at 5-5 in the second set until Casals snapped, "If you want it that badly you can have it." Rosie accused Virginia of being a bad sport in the presser after the match. ""Every time I play her it seems like she argues every point. At the professional level I don't think a palyer should carry on the way Virginia does. It's unnecessary. It's very unsportsmanlike to conduct herself that way." It didn't stop there. Casals continued, "I'm not the only one who feels that way either. Virginia never gives anyone credit when she loses. She's a bad loser. Everybody hates to lose. I hate to lose." When Wade was asked about Rosie's comments she replied, "Rosie's always been a very good sport. I don't pretend to be a good sport. I'm not a bad sport. if I feel like doing something, I do it."

The two were heard shouting at each other in the locker room afterwards.

Off court storms were matches by on court drama, as Wade took 1 hour and 55 minutes to dispose of Greer Stevens for the second week in a row. Stevens couldn't convert 3 set points on her serve at 5-3. She led again at 5-2 in the tiebreak and was unable to convert 2 more set points. Wade finally won the tiebreak at 11-9 on match point #7.

Turnbull's semi loss snaps a 13 match win streak, probably the longest of her career.

Wade had 2 set points of her own vs Barker in the semis. Virginia apparently did feel like complimenting Barker for her semi win. "She played out of her mind. She hit winners off her backhanf I couldn't believe. She hit an incredible percentage of winners. She dictated the game." Barker recalled being a ball girl for "her idol" Wade at the age of 11. Barker, who was never seeded in any Avon event, now is guarenteed of making the 8 woman tour finale.

7,185 come out for the final. Dianne won in straight sets as Barker commits a slew of errors. Sue complianed of being ill afterwards. "A lot of us were sick last night. I think it was something we ate. Today I wasn't able to stay in the rally long enough to do what I had to do."

The Futures tour features players whose rankings were low enough or who performed poorly enough on the Avon tour to merit exclusion from the higher tier events. For example, Kathy Jordan is a newcomer to the tour. She won early in the season on the Futures circuit and went on to beat Tracy Austin in an Avon event. Regina Marsikova, however, finished ’78 just outside the top ten and suffered early losses on the Avon tour which demoted her to the Futures circuit. Then you have players like Betty Ann Stuart and Sharon Walsh, who had long careers with mediocre success who made a living out of one or two wins a week in singles and perhaps a better run in doubles. The “Futures” name implied that you would catch the up and coming players, yet often the winners had been around for awhile.

Re: 1979 results

March 31-April 1 Clairol Crown, Carlsbad, California, US (Hard)
Venue: La Costa

Prize Money= $200,000 US
A WTA sanctioned exhibition.

Draw=4

1R: Dianne Fromholtz d Martina Navratilova 7-5 6-1
1R: Chris Evert d Tracy Austin 6-1 7-5

FI: Chris Evert d Dianne Fromholtz 3-6 6-3 6-1

3rd place: Auatin d Kerry Reid 6-2 7-6 (*Reid replaces Navratilova)

Dianne crashes the elite party, but Chrissie wins the event and avenges losses to Austin and Fromholtz at the Avon finale. Fromholtz upset the plot line in taking out the world #1. As the first outdoor event in months Martina was vulnerable. Dianne's life has undergone a lot a change of late. In recent months Dianne dropped 22 pounds. This was in addtion to fighting off chicken pox, mumps, and measles, and flu. She also lost a fiance with her poundage, breaking off an engagement.

Fromholz took out Evert at the Graden just a week ago. In contrast Navratilova complained later of sore thigh muscles. Fromholtz ws "hoping like mad I would be picked" to round out the 4 woman field. She had almost been pased over in favor of Pam Shriver. The hard hitting Aussie repeatedly passed Navratilova's on the backhand side. "There was no pressure on me. I had nothing to to lose. And I'll have nothing to lose against Chris." (NYT) Martina: "I couldn't cope with her 200 mile an hour passing shots."

Dianne came out firing the next day, shooting to a 6-3 3-1 lead before the the wheels came off. Evert proceeded to take the next 9 games in a row-dropping only 1 gbame in the third set. dianne was doing all the damge with her forehand this time. When Evert nudged ahead with a series of drop shots and errrrs from a tired Fromholyz the end was inevitable.

Quote of trhe week; Evert on the final: "I may look unemotional, but I was going crazy on crucial points."
