Did it ever happen that a player was late for a match?
... and was forced to withdraw by the officials?
On WTA level?
Well, it happens all the time on the amateur level

I think it happened to Suzannne Lenglen at Wimbledon. She was defaulted, and she never returned to the tournament out of devastation, or something like that.

Re: Did it ever happen that a player was late for a match?
Wasn't there a thread a while ago about a player (I think it was Jovanovski, but I could be wrong) who flew to the wrong Carlsbad? I can't remember whether she made it to the proper Carlsbad or not.
Update: this was the thread (she made it, just ):

I seem to remember Venus turning up about fifteen minutes late for a match on an outside court at Wimbledon a few years back. She got a couple of boos when she arrived. She didn't give a fuck.
At least I think this happened.

JJs driver to took her to Albert Park instead of Melbourne Park for her 1R AO match against Paszek. I don't think she was late, the match seemed to start on time, but she was definitely shaky.

A Wimbledon official didn't escort her. They forgot to take her.

Yeah, it was her 2010 R16 vs Groth out on Court 2 I think.

Svetlana Krivencheva was defaulted in Istanbul Qualifying one year I think. Her plane was late and she couldn't make it to the court on time.

Kirilenko was pretty late this year in Wimbledon when she played Dominguez-Lino on an outside court.

Could have been the escorts fault again. Who knows.
Bojana did make it to the real Carlsbad on the day of her match, a few hours before it.

Serena got booed at the Olympic final for coming on court then leaving again for like 3 minutes (so she was "late" for starting the match)
She didn't give a fuck though and ensured the booers in the crowd got as much play as they deserved

On the men's tour John McEnroe was defaulted from a doubles match at the US Open cuz he was stuck in traffic. The irony is that he's from New York and really should have known better.

Re: Did it ever happen that a player was late for a match?
I remember Mary Pierce turning up a quarter of an hour late at Wimbledon one year. When she finally arrived she still took ages laying out her towels on her chair just right etc.
