Judge: There's enough evidence for trial

"Thursday, March 4, 2004

Associated Press
COMPTON, Calif. -- A 23-year-old man was ordered to stand trial Thursday on a charge of murdering the half-sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

A judge ruled there was enough evidence against Robert Edward Maxfield to proceed to trial.

Yetunde Price, 31, was shot Sept. 14 as she sat in the passenger seat of a car. Investigators believe she and her boyfriend argued with residents on a Compton street known for gangs and drugs.

Authorities believe Maxfield fired the fatal shot. Another man, Aaron Michael Hammer, is also awaiting trial on a murder charge, but prosecutors have said the bullet that killed Price did not come from the rifle allegedly fired by Hammer.

Maxfield's attorney, Mark Shapiro, said outside court his client will plead not guilty when he is arraigned March 16.

Maxfield remained in custody without bail.

Price was a registered nurse, beauty shop owner and personal assistant to her famous sisters.

The Williams sisters grew up in Compton, where they learned to play tennis on public courts."
