I'd rather she skip this tournament and get fully fit for the AO, than play it and risk further aggravating the injury.
Still, it'd be nice if we had one season where she never picked up any injury.

Hopefully it is more about precaution. No need to take a risk that could put her AO chances in jeopardy. Going in cold not ideal, but can also take pressure off.

Here is the article which suggests that Maria withdrew because of sponsors. She wanted to play in Brisbane and probably would play but the sponsors pushed her

Btw about dsanders thinking of potentially problematic 1st rounders:
1. She can't meet Venus until the 4th round.
2. She beat Robson twice on grass (Maria's worst surface  ), playing at 30%.
3. Kuzzy is as useless as the empress these days
