Alexandra is a former Top 10 junior who's been left in the dust as her contemporaries, Victoria, Caroline, Aga and Agnes have made their names on the WTA tour.
Now, Alexandra seems to want to make her own noise. She just lost out on winning her 2nd (and by far biggest) title at the 75K hardcourt in Monzon. She is now within the Top 250 and warrants her own cheering thread!
Hope she can recover, but it's such a devastating fact for an athlete of every sport to look into the mirror and just have to accept that your body which you trained since your early childhood can't seem to hold it up on this level.
Oh yes, I am pretty sure. In the interview she said she already started light training and should begin full training regime in about 2-3 weeks. I kind of suspect it will take a little longer than that but she should be back in a month or two. It was an arthroscopic surgery so I suspect she didn't have a ligament or anything like that, just some tiny bone problem in the wrist.
Why is that? From what I understand, there is not much of a tennis federation in Romania. Also, tennis is traditionally a rich person's sport, and I know Romania is not one of the richer countries in Europe.
I've become somewhat fascinated by Romanian tennis. I can't explain why. It started with Sorana back in 2008-09, and then I started noticing many of the other Romanian girls making gains in the top 100, 50, 30. I also remember liking Spirlea back in her day. And of course I loved Nastase as a kid. (dating myself here) I watched him play McEnroe live at the US Open, and it was one of the most remarkable and humorous spectacles I've ever witnessed. Both players demanded the umpire be removed from the chair.
The Romanian tennis players all seem to be a bit quirky. I like that.
