NCAA singles 1st round

#85 Kristina Smith (UCI) vs #19 Maho Kowase (Georgia)

- The Georgia player is not tall and overpowering so she's a good match up for Kristina. Both players are about the same size and look evenly matched. Kristina just looks to be playing tougher mentally.

- Kristina got broken at 1-1 and fell down 1-2 early in the match. Then with Kowase serving Kristina had 4 break point chances but didn't convert on any of them falling behind 1-3. Kristina fights back holding serve then breaking Kowase to tie it 3-3. Kowase returns the favor breaking Kristina who trails 3-4. At this point Kristina really showed her mental toughness. Kowase was serving and had about 7 Ad points to potentially take a 5-3 lead. But Kristina fought off and saved all those points, ended up breaking Kowase and winning the longest game of the match that had about 10 deuces to tie it 4-4. From there Kristina held and broke Kowase a 3rd time to win the 1st set 6-4. So Kristina was repeatedly on the edge of being down 3-5 but didn't give in and instead ended up winning the next 3 games straight to win the 1st set.

- Kristina is up 1-0 in the 2nd when it starts to rain. The bad news would be if the match had to be finished indoors, a surface the Georgia player is more familiar with. Plus indoors doesn't offer streaming video. Hopefully they dry the courts and can finish the match outdoors.

- The 2 players Kristina could potentially play in the next round is scheduled in the latest slot of the day and any long delays cuts into their recovery time before playing the 2nd round scheduled for tomorrow at noon local time. That could benefit Kristina if she advances to the next round.

- Cal Poly's #30 Andre Dome def. Georgia Tech's #44 Juan Spir 6-3,6-2 in the men's 1st round. Big congrats to him. :worship:

Re: NCAA singles 1st round

Maho Kowase (Georgia) def. Kristina Smith (UCI) 4-6,7-6,6-3

- Kristina wins 7 of the first 11 games when it was played outdoors. Then she only wins 8 of the next 21 games when it was moved indoors. It's very tough in the middle of a match to change to another playing surface you're not familiar with. :help: This is a unique situation under college tennis. In pro tennis they probably wouldn't change surfaces during a match. They would just close the retractable roof or wait until the courts dry off.

- Outdoor courts are hard and fast while indoor courts are made of carpet and play slower. Georgia has both indoor and outdoor courts that they practice and play matches on. Southern California schools and the area in general don't have any indoor courts.

- Kristina had a great showing just winning a set. She has set the bench mark :worship: that returning players like Marivick Mamiit and Sarah Gong and other UCI future #1 singles players can aspire too.

- Good luck to Kristina as she plays on a German club team this summer. :cheer:

I was referring to indoor courts with the same surface as a school's outdoor courts. The only difference in speed usually comes when they are resurfaced in different years. No carpet -- most Texas and southern indoor courts are just for tennis and have no carpet. Illinois' are not carpet.

Funny, I saw Coach on Monday and she was :woohoo: too.

In her first collegiate match, while not yet coached at LB, the incoming LB frosh went 3-6, 7-6, 8-10 vs. the very experienced and what likely will be UCI's # 1 this year. (I may be wrong on first two sets but something like that).

Not sure I'd be :bounce: over that result by my # 1 over a 'raw' incoming 4 star frosh who will only get better. Just a thought.

Yep, 3 seniors, 1 vacant all year (Coach has previously said a signed recruit blew her HS finals a year ago and never got eligible)

Spanish girl left in early March for family issues.

According to email from coach, Belgian freshman told coach in March she was headed home to study in Belgium and no longer planning to play tennis. I guess that is better than some other sports like women's basketball where girls really don't want to play anymore but won't give it up because they want their scholarship money?

That leaves two starters returning plus unknown with the walk on who played one dual match in singles when someone was hurt and barely won a three setter versus another walk on.

This recruiting class reads really good. Former British # 1 plus a french girl with a higher rating that former Big West Player of the Year Anais Dallara. And the So Cal freshman is already two points short of being as good as Gouci's # 1. :bounce:

Re: Laguna Niguel Summer Circuit

I agree that if Haley Thompson gets better it's because of more practice time and playing better competition. NOT because a 'raw' player not yet coached at LB is somehow getting a coaching upgrade by playing at Long Beach St.

Beachform I dropped that tidbit about Taylor Dent and Misty May being cousins for volleyball fans like the real Beachman and Rob which I'm sure you'll pass it along to them. ;)

La Verne Summer Circuit

Looks like 4 star Alexis Valenzuela is a good pick-up for Cal St. Fullerton since she defeated Long Beach State's 4 star Hazuki Onaga :oh: and considering Fullerton hasn't listed their next head coach yet.

Also looks like Hannah Stone is transferring from playing #1 singles at Northern Arizona to Cal Poly.

5 star Sarah Gealer has HI next to her name. Did she transfer to Hawaii?

The same Onaga who then lost badly to a bottom end 3 star headed to Pomona Pitzer? You are one hell of a prognosticator.

Oh wait.... 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 you used your crystal ball to predict UCI victory too.

Give it up man. :help:

ON A MORE SERIOUS FRONT: WHAT IS UP WITH FULLERTON STILL NOT HAVING A COACH WHEN THEY KNEW THEIR COACH WAS RETIRING NEARLY A YEAR AGO? Did they offer someone who then turned it down?

Cal Poly news

Newspaper article on former Cal Poly star Suzie Matzenauer who is currently ranked #1 in women's singles in the Pacific Northwest.

UC Davis alum 4 star Ellie Edles is the new assistant coach at Cal Poly.

Interesting sophomore 5 star Sophia Bott has been removed from the Cal Poly roster.

Last season's UCI assistant Dianne Matias has been named head coach at Cal St. Fullerton.

Matias Named Head Women's Tennis Coach.

UCI chEater news

Replacing the Big West Player of the Year,

Mazy Watrous (3-20 her freshman year at # 6 singles for Colorado) is transferring to Irvine.

No doubt she will play top half in the typically stacked chEater line up this season (justified because she played at powerhouse CU in the Pac 12 even though she couldn't even beat bottom end ladies from Air Force or NAU). :tape:

Welcome to the Big West Ms. Watrous :wavey:

Re: UCI chEater news

Mazy Watrous joins an growing list of California 5 star players who probably were enamored to play in the Pac 12 but ended up unhappy and returning back to California.

Mazy Watrous - transfers out of Colorado

Hailey Johnson - transfers out of Arizona

Danielle Flores - transfers out of Utah

Picking a school based on their reputation from college football or basketball isn't really a good idea.

Long Beach St. Fall Invite

The Long Beach St. Fall Invite began on Friday.

Here are Day 1 results.

Notice on the results sheet the names are on one page and the scores are posted 2 pages below. How messed up is that?

Someone at Long Beach St. is too incompetent to post the scores next to the matches. :help:

#267 ·
Yep, pretty poor.

Oh wait, UCI didn't even post your own results Friday OR Saturday. Guess you coach doesn't give a sh*t. How messed it is that?

Let me help you. Day 2

LB frosh beats likely UCI # 1 junior Marvick Mammit 6-0, 6-1 in Flight A quarters

LB has a player in all four flight finals... had 3 of the four Flight A semi finalists.

Long Beach St. fall invite

Alert! Alert! Alert! yet another freshman on her way out from Long Beach St.?

Alexis Valenzuela of Cal St. Fullerton def. Laura Eales of Long Beach St. 6-3, 6-3.

The last 2 Long Beach St. freshmen to lose to a Cal St. Fullerton player were LBS freshmen Anne-Sophie Willems and Eva Rodriguez both losing to CSF's Emilia Borkowski last season. Both Willems and Rodriguez ended up leaving Long Beach St. :oh: :oh: :oh:

You mean like Ania Jeczmionka... from Poland? Four years on team... a non starter good chunk of career and had some iffy loses. Became starter until early March last year when Rodriquez returned to Spain for personal reasons. As I recall Jeczmionka was POINT # 3 versus UCI at the conference tournament on the way to yet another UCI runner up finish.:lol::lol:

Alert! Alert! Alert! yet another 2nd place finish from UCI on the horizon!

Good to know Gouci is BITTER already.

If not for LB State... Gouci would have how many more league titles in a decade?

ANSWER: NINE in the last eleven years. Is it possible to finish second behind the same school that often?

And soon to be TEN.... runner up finishes to LB... since 2002. That 'could have been' one heck of a dynasty. I am assuming your bitterness comes from being a perennial FIRST LOSER.:fiery::devil:

PS... setting the record straight: Willems was a starter the entire year but told the coach in early March that she was gonna return to her country and study at a uni back home in Belgium per her parents demand. No APR point lost as she is back in school full time in Belgium. It is my understanding she is coming over this spring to visit too.... not exactly the SCANDAL you imply, eh?
