2013 Australian PYW Championships!

Welcome to the 2013 Australian PYW Championships, held this year in Australia’s cotton capital, Wee Waa. Fifty-six players are taking part representing Australia’s finest and most mediocre women’s tennis professionals. The Wee Waa & District Tennis Club welcomes all players and spectators who have come from as far afield as Narrabri, Moree and Walgett to see who will receive the prestigious Michelle Jaggard-Lai trophy at the end of the tournament. The organising committee wishes to think the tournament’s major sponsors, Namoi District Towing and the Wee Waa Hot Bread Shop and also Ms. Virginia Nugent who has taken time out from her Meals and Wheels duties to chalk the lines for the occasion. Enjoy the tournament and don’t forget that Wee Waa Hot Bread Shop is having specials on cob bread and six packs of scones for the tournament’s duration.

Qualifying starts on Friday December 6.

Qualifying is finished! Thanks guys. I'll be home in a couple of hours and will post the finalised main draw which we can all vote for straight away. Plus someone from Narrabri's newspaper is putting together a short report so I'll try and repost that too.

Cadet journalist Jack Wharton from Narrabri’s newspaper “The Courier” has filed this report:

Wee Waa hosts fictional Australian Tennis competition
Jack Wharton, Wee Waa

Our westerly neighbours in Wee Waa are again in the spotlight, currently hosting the 2013 Australian PYW Championships. It caps off a big year for the town after unexpectedly hosting the launch of the new Daft Punk album earlier in the year. Fifty-six of Australia’s top female tennis players have descended on the sleepy town to fight it out for this year’s title. Twenty-four of those were accepted directly into the main draw, while the other 32 had to battle it out in two rounds of qualifying.

After the groundsmen at the Wee Waa & District Tennis Club had primed Wee Waa’s articial grass court complex, the first round got underway with some of the country's brightest juniors claiming easy victories. Helen Perez scored a 6-0 6-0 “double doughnut” victory over Melissa Gianotti of Western Australia while another youngster, Nithika Bains, also got a donut when she beat Rachel Tredoux 6-0 6-2. This caused an unfortunate incident in which a vocal spectator waving an Estonian flag called her a “bogan” and “Rachel Tre-doughnut” and was permanently banned from the tournament. Others had much tougher wins, especially Nicole Collie who had a marathon 6-4 2-6 11-9 win over Diane Mladin. The almost four hour match caused some impatience from other players: Stephanie Bengson and Karen Ryan were officially cautioned after over-indulging in the club’s UDL range and became inappropriately boisterous while waiting for the match to be completed.

In the final round of qualifying, Karen and Stephanie appeared to struggle in their clash, likely due to their indulgences the previous night. They played a drawn out affair with Bengson finally winning in three sets despite two injury timeouts for “stomach cramps”. Alexandra Nancarrow coasted into the main draw losing only three games in two matches. She may be one to watch in the main draw, especially as she has drawn support from an avid fan who has taken to intimidating anyone who cheers for Alex’s opponent. The final match was a topsy-turvy affair in which Ashley Keir saved several matchpoints in the second set of her battle with Masha Jovankovic and then swept through the tiebreak without losing a point. Masha swiftly overcame the challenge, winning the final set 6-1 to claim final spot in the main draw which will commence immediately.
