We had a lot of fun last year with some nice interviews, gifs and Korean soothsayers.

Last year she reached the quarterfinals against MJMS.

Any thoughts or expectations after messing up the US hard court season ?

That was fairly easy (2 and 3) but Niculescu's form probably helped her out. By comparison the next round with Marion will be much more tricky. Playing Marion on a fairly quick surface? Hontou ni muzakashii desu ne? But hopefully she serves strongly (getting a good amount of good first serves in for a change), that will be key.

Easy and solid win, as it should be against someone like Niculescu!
Only got broken once, 3 aces, 2 DFs, almost 80% won over 1st serve, still over 60% on 2nd serve, only 1st serve percentage was too low in 1st set but can´t complain about the rest.
Niculescu is in awful shape, this was a must win, so can´t be too crazy about that one win but it was at least a good start.

Bartoli next, never really know with her but Julia definitely has her chances but needs to play one of her better matches for sure.
Also depends on Bartoli´s serve as well as on her return, therefore Julia has to serve really well to win, hope for some positive signs in Tokyo from her, good luck!!

Re: Julia in East Asia 2012 - Tokio

Re: Julia in East Asia 2012 - Tokio

2-6, 5-7:(
Not really unexpected loss.
Looking at the stats an obviously pretty average performance from Marion was enough to win. Marion made 12 Df`s in this match with no ace. Julia had 1 ace and 3 df with 59% first serve in the whole match.
In the second set Julia serve stats got better and she was a little bit more competitive. She could break Marion twice but got rebroken instantly.
At 5-5 , 30-0 while serving in the second she lost 5 points in a row and it was over then.
All in all there is to say that she can`t cope with such opponents right now.

:fiery: Why isn't she able to take advantage of this? Why isn't she able to hold serve in these situations? Maybe it has something to do with - I don't know - mental strength?

Re: Julia in East Asia 2012 - Tokio

She lost before I noticed it . Well, I thought that it would be tough for her. The stats show that Marion's first serve did a lot of damage when it went in. She had 12 DFs though but Julia couldn't punish her enough for that.

Her level must improve. At the moment she cannot beat opponents of this level regularly.

Re: Julia in East Asia 2012 - Tokio

Julia on twitter:

"Pretty good match today in singles against marion!she was just better!all credit to her!doubles with bara still to come today!lets go"

Well at least someone takes it easy.
At least she tweeted something. Last week @Boston__Rob , an asshole from Australia who lost money with her, insulted her and threatened to heckle her at next year's AO: 1 2 3

And someone called her on German a "retarded dirty cun*" and a "lousy piece of shit", who "needs to be thumped". Really abhorrent if you have to read it. Hopefully it didn't bother her too much.

Julia is positive and that is very good for her. After that kind of lose she can say that that marion was better. This makes her the real winner!

Yeah...losses against players like Bartoli shouldn't be her major concern this year (even if Bartoli is very beatable these days), if you look at this:

"Best" of Julia Görges 2012:

Doha Premier Hard Feb 19 2012
R2 #114 Varvara Lepchenko-Q - Goerges(16) 7-6(4) 7-6(5)

Roland Garros Clay Jun 10 2012
R3 #88 Arantxa Rus - Goerges(25) 7-6(5) 2-6 6-2

Bad Gastein International Clay Jun 17 2012
R1 #211 Richel Hogenkamp-Q - Goerges(1) 3-6 6-3 6-3

Palermo International Clay Jul 15 2012
QF #71 Barbora Zahlavova Strycova(8) - Goerges(3) 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 6-1

US Open Hard Sep 9 2012
R1 #125 Kristyna Pliskova-Q - Goerges(18) 7-6(4) 6-1

Seoul International Hard Sep 24 2012
R1 #78 Silvia Soler Espinosa - Goerges(5) 1-6 7-6(5) 6-2

losing all those TB against these players.

Re: Julia in East Asia 2012 - Tokio

Typical defeat for Julia. Tons of breaks, bp, contested games but Julia can't snatch the deciding points, regardless who's the opponent. She led 30:15 twice at 5*-5 and 5-6* second set and Bartoli made the next 3 points, but at least she tried to hang in after she didn't use a bp at 2-5*. Looks like she can only beat the likes of Peer and Niculescu atm. She definitely had ups and downs this season, but since her Radwanska win she's on a downswing.

Re: Julia in East Asia 2012 - Tokio

well, couldn´t expect her to win against Bartoli but I expected a bit more tbh!
No one was able to watch the match but Marion is obviously able to play some great tennis, especially on a surface like that, so I guess we can believe Julia here, it´s just really tough for almost every player to beat Bartoli from the baseline when she has a good day.

But stats tell us also that Julia just didn´t serve good enough today, only 1 ace, only 61% won on 1st serve, you have to serve better if you want to win such matches. 2nd serve got killed by Bartoli anyway, no surprise.

On the other hand Julia´s return was too weak, as usual, Bartoli´s serve was for sure not great today, 12 DFs, only 48% 1st serve in but seemed like Julia only was able to break when Marion helped her with DFs.
15/34 on Bartoli´s 2nd serve, but if you don´t count the DFs Marion made 15/22, that´s just too much...

We´ll see what Julia can do next week, she isn´t in awful shape at least, she played a good match against Soler last week before he turned nuts, easy win against Niculescu, she could win some matches with a good draw, let´s hope for it, she needs some points and confidence before the season is over.
Start of 2013 won´t be easy for her, many pts to defend, Melbourne will probably be her last GS for a while where she will be seeded...
