Re: Maria Sharapova is Bing's most-searched sports star in 2011
Most Searched Sports Stars:
Girl power! The boys got served by Maria Sharapova in sports-related queries, beating Tiger Woods by 4 percent and Brett Favre by 117 percent. Women’s Tennis also dominated the field with Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki all finishing among the top 5 most searched sports stars.
When it comes to major sports, Derek Jeter ruled the diamond, Kobe Bryant outdueled King James (Lebron) on the hardwood and a retired Brett Favre won top honors on the gridiron.
I can imagine sp!ffy, doomsday, madmax & co. sitting in front of the computer all day and typing in Sharapova's name in Bing search. On a more serious note, it's good for the women's sport that so many players are in the list.
Bing :spit: Stats from Google, please. I think Maria could still top that, but citing the statistics from Bing is just not representative of online popularity.
And it's perfectly possible, even if this were true on Google (but who knows), that it has no correlation with the ATP making more money, drawing more attendance and having more overall fan interest.
All it would mean is that WTA players are more gossiped talked about. ATP players are probably read more on Sports and tennis websites.
I'm not trying to knock this (good for them). I'm just offering proper perspective.
