This morning Esther Vergeer announced on Twitter she is retiring from tennis with immediate effect. She will hold a press conference at 1pm at the ABN AMRO WTT tournament. At this mens tournament she's is the tournament director of the wheelchair event. She'll also be launching her official biography today.
It's sad that she's leaving the sport. She can be very proud of her run of 470 matches during a 10 year time span. Olympic gold at four Olympic games and 27 grand slam victories.
Well i suppose this was expected if she said she didnt feel really motivated to play anymore. Sad to see her go but will be interesting to see if anyone steps up to dominate or if it will be more open now
Can't believe I missed this - was quite ill for a few weeks - guess it happened then....
The undisputed greatest tennis player of all time - and a defining figure for her sport. Too bad she is so overshadowed by "able bodied" players with 1/100th of her achievements. Enjoy retirement Esther - you are missed!
