Heads up! An Israeli on MTF is saying Conor's match will be on TV there tomorrow. The final will be around noon Irish time, so keep an eye on atdhe, fromsport and the like for stream links.

What an amazing week for Conor. If he wins tomorrow he will be around 170!

Conor Niland wins Israel Open
Saturday, 8 May 2010 16:16

Ireland's Conor Niland has won the final of the Israel Open in Ramat Hasharon today.

Niland claimed the victory by beating Brazilian Thiago Alves, the number four seed who is ranked 116 in the world, coming from a set down to win 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 in a final that lasted three hours and eight minutes.

Niland shocked number three seed Rainer Schuettler in the second round of the tournament in three sets.

As a result of his win, Niland becomes the Irish number one, taking over from Louk Sorensen, and he also breaks into the world top 200. He also picks up a cheque for $14,400.

Irish Davis Cup stalwarth - Conor Niland - today won the Israel Open $100,000 Challenger event in Ramat Hasharon defeating the Number 4 seed ThiagoAlves (BRA) in the final on a scoreline of 57 76(5) 63.

Alves, who has a current ranking of 127 in the ATP World rankings took the first set before Limerick Lawn Tennis Club member Niland stormed back taking the final two sets in a match lasting 3 hours and 8 minutes.

This is a huge career breakthrough for Niland. In the early part of the season he was within a couple of points of qualifying in Doha and also at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

In recent weeks he reached the main draw of the US Men's Claycourt Championships in Houston. Last month, he achieved a career high ATP World ranking of 222 following success on the Challenger tour in Jersey and also in representing Ireland in Davis Cup against Turkey.

His win today will bring him into the top 200 in the World and he takes over from Louk Sorensen as Irish Number 1.

Conor is the senior player at the BNP Paribas National Tennis Academy at Dublin City University and his success comes as no surprise to Academy Director Garry Cahill.

He commented: "Conor has worked very hard to make certain improvements in his game in recent months and in particular his level of fitness has improved dramatically. All of us who work with him on a daily basis at the Academy can see the improvements and we felt it was only a question of when he would make this breakthrough. "

Dubliner in main draw at junior slams

OVER-EXCITEMENT has rarely been a condition linked to Irish tennis. But Dubliner John Morrissey will provide Ireland with a player in the main draw at the junior events at Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year for the first time in the modern age (you want to know the most difficult question to answer at a tennis Grand Slam? “Where are all the Irish players?”).

Teenager Morrissey has been on the tour for the last few seasons illustrating, as Conor Niland has done since leaving college in the US, that the best way to improve is to live the life and learn how to win in places like Baku or Mumbai.

Currently ranked as the 36th best junior player in the world, Morrissey came to the attention of the International Tennis Federation, who invited him to take part in a development plan aimed at players who are inside the top 40 and from less developed tennis nations.

The top 40 is the cut-off point as the French Open, the hardest Slam to get in to, is unlikely to allow a player outside of that ranking to compete even if they are ITF approved.

The coaching they receive and the intense tournament play is designed to help the players make an impact internationally.

Morrissey also hopes to compete in the Youth Olympics next August in Singapore.

The team of 12 players consists of six boys and six girls and the run of tournaments listed include Santa Croce, Astrid Bowl, Offenbach and Roehampton, which are all Grade One events, the Italian Open, which is a Grade A event, as well as the two Grand Slams.

Sam Barry, who is also an Irish junior ranked inside the top 100, will have to go through the qualification process if he is to play on the red clay in Paris.

Ranked at 85, Barry is several hundred places higher than the next highest-ranked Irish player who is out at around 450.

Morrissey’s grind is paying off. He’s ahead of the Irish posse and this year has begun to play in senior ATP events, a significant step up.

He’s not yet challenging the precocious teenage golfing twins, 15-year-old Leona and Lisa Maguire. But he’s stepped on to a path.

Roland Garros qualifying draw!

Horrible first round for Louk, Jose Acasuso who took a set off Federer here at Roland Garros last year. Conor has an easier, and much more interesting matchup, against none other than the whipping boy of British tennis, Alex Bogdanovic.

Louk should qualify if he can get past Acasuso, and Conor has a very tough 2nd round against, most likely, Volandri, but let's just see how things go tomorrow.

Just heard on the radio Conor won in two, and Louk made a very close match with Acasuso, 7-6 6-4 or something. Not sure of the clay accomplishments of both but those are good results.

Well, the guy who beat Conor 6-2 6-4 with Conor 0/8 on BPs is in the third round. And yeah ^^ cant wait for the grass.

Sam is through to the Semi Finals of the Grade 1 in Belgium :yeah:
