That's what Sergio does - inputs the rankings in each week to the database - so it saves managers doing them manually. We just type the list of entrants and it produces them in the tournament format in Entry List order which the manager just cuts and pastes into the tournament thread

Re: "Ask the board" thread!
Mind, you got to spell the names exactly correct and have Java, so I can see why people would choose not to use it.

Hardly rocket science spelling a players name right

Yup, inputting non-ASCII characters, randomly placed dots, Cyrillic characters, etc is totally non-trivial.
Not meaning to disrespect sfar's work, which I'm very grateful for and use most of the time, and it's impossible to program something like that so that everyone is pleased with it. But there's no need to say that those that don't are particularly stupid.
There are other little annoyances too, like being unable to input a nation for a newcomer, not finding players who are in singles but not in doubles, random changes of number of spaces between player names, not aligned to TF rules for LEs, etc.

Making Evita's sheet suitable for TF would be a possible step to make improvements still.

I've thought of improvements, but now I don't have the time I used to in order to develop them.

That's true, there's much more info on men tennis than on women tennis, but I guess that's not a reason to stop managing if you really like to do it.

Requiring Java can be a handicap if you're not very keen using PCs, but I don't think it's a major problem.

You don't have to think about names if you copy/paste names directly from the thread into the notepad.

I didn't call anyone stupid, I just said it is easier to manage with the available tools (and the not available ones in valac's case :P ).

I've always mentioned that the Entry List Maker was a tool to help create Entry Lists. But it's a non-human application that can correct human errors but has other errors of it's own and the output must ALWAYS be supervised by the manager.
For example, I consider that new players are less than 10% of an Entry List, so it's easier for the manager to put the country manually after the entry list is made than force the manager to put it in every player. Then, the tool does find players who are in singles and not in doubles.
Regarding random changes of number of spaces between player names, I really don't understand what you mean and not aligned to TF rules for LEs, well I must say the tool was concieved a couple of years ago for MTF and I haven't touched it ever since, but this can be solved with an easy workaround.

I think the core of Evita's spreadsheet is still valid for WTF, but Evita has the same problem as me, he hasn't as much time left as he used to.

Re: "Ask the board" thread!
sfar, it wasn't really meant as criticism of your tool, which works well enough as long as you know its limitations, it was meant as an attempted explanation of why people would choose not to use it.

That is true. I can understand it would be too much of an effort for Evita right now. Maybe if he gets around to it someday.

I offered my sheet something like a year ago and as far as I can recall wikuch and somebody else have used it without any issues. If somebody is interested I can share it, but the last thing I want is to be pushy about it. Evita's sheet is good enough, but I did not like the lack of ISR treatment so I rather developed one for my personal use (and as I am lazy enough I automated everything).

Re: "Ask the board" thread!
Anyhow the development of Evita's sheet and/or EntryListMaker will not increase the number of managers.

It's ok, Hakon, I appreciate any comment on the tool, whether it's good or bad. I only tried to explain why I did it that way.

It won't increase them, but if the tools did not exist, it would surely decrease them.
