Match Statistics
What makes someone a top player in women's tennis? Is it a good service, return or mental strength? Is it true that there is a big difference between the top players and the subtop? Is it possible to predict the winner of two players when they play to each other, by means of past match statistics? A lot of questions, and we are going to try to find an answer on them. But to answer these questions we require a lot of data. Therefore is my main goal to collect the match statistics from tournaments in 2006 as far as possible. Only 8 tournaments (the 4 Grand Slams, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships, Nasdaq-100 Open, Zurich Open, Kremlin Cup) let these information available even after the tournament is over. So it will be a hard work and I'll need your help!

All the data from the Kremlin Cup 2005, the Zurich Open 2005 and the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships 2005 are now available.

The match statistics from the Hopman Cup are updated (02/01/2006), see here
When you use these statistics to fill in the match predictor, you obtain this result (Win - Loss prediction):
1. Ivanovic (6-0)
2. Stosur (5-1)
3. Dulko (4-2)
4. Krajicek (3-3)
5. Groenefeld (2-4)
6. Raymond (1-5)
7. Arvidsson (0-6)
Thus Ivanovic is, according to the match predictor, the best player, Stosur the second best, etc. Off course, these match statistics are not yet that representative (it's just from one or two matches).

The current statistic ranking you find here
The current average match statistics you find here
The reason why Ivanovic stands on the 1st place, is probably because of her good return (She has the best statistic for winning points on the return).
Stosur has the most efficient return, according to the current average match statistics.

Despite her loss today, Ivanovic is still number one on the statistic ranking. This ranking predicts, by means of previous matches, which player has the most chances to win a match (in comparison with the other players). So it's just a prediction!
Krajicek has the most chances to win tomorrow, but it's close.
