Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

10K Egypt:
R1 d. (Q) Mai el Kamash EGY (NR) 6-0 6-3
R2 d. Sharon Sanchana Paul IND (#1233) 6-2 6-0
QF d. (7) Ola Abou Zekry EGY (#741) 6-1 6-0
SF d. Claudia Williams NZL (NR) 6-7(2) 6-0 6-2
F l. to (5) Jan Abaza USA (#638) 2-6 6-3 4-6
Lost doubles QF, but overall a GREAT two weeks for Despina in Egypt that will give her a new-career high singles ranking after almost three years

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

15K Italy:
R1 l. to (Q) Martina di Giuseppe ITA (#1081, former #381) 3-6 3-6
She was playing too well for a while, its only normal that she has some random losses here and there. Story of her career so far IMO

She was the second seed in singles and it didn't go so well. She's also the second seed in doubles with a bye to the QF so hopefully she does better there

Also last week she finally cracked the top 350 (after three years of having a career high of 351) and got up to 322! Now she's 326, but still really good for her considering everything she's gone through the past few years. Hopefully she can go even further and reach the top 300 later on this year

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

She lost the semis last week in doubles

This week:
10K Italy:
R1 d. (Q) Camila Scala ITA (#1230) 6-1 6-1
R2 d. Martina Spigarelli ITA (#1213) 6-2 6-2
QF l. to (6) Tess Sugnaux SUI (#562) 2-6 2-6

She was the top seed in doubles with Balducci and they cruised through the first two matches, but then lost the SF

Also, Despina is up to a new career-high this week, #317!

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

25K Germany:
R1 l. to (1) Maryna Zanevska UKR (#156) 6-4 1-6 5-7
Zanevska ended up winning the title without dropping a set
Despina was so close, but at least she showed that she can play well
She also lost R1 doubles
And her ranking slipped to 341, but hopefully she can bounce back and rise again

Another 25K Germany:
R1 d. (5) Eva Birnerova CZE (#266, career high 59) 6-3 1-0 ret.
R2 vs. (WC) Laura Schaeder GER (#579)
I know it was a retirement, but that's a great win for Despina . Schaeder barely beat a fellow wild card, please Despina don't mess up this draw!! Also Pervak was the top seed (could've played Despina in QF) and she got upset in R1. Please Despina don't blow this opportunity! Unfortunately I've been following her for too long to know that she has a lot of random losses, so I won't get my hopes up
Also she lost R1 doubles 10-8 in the super tiebreak

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

6-3 1-6 1-6
She is so unpredictable
I don't even know what to say at this point. She will never be consistent. The good thing is that she keeps trying and her ranking has improved from the beginning of the year, but her results are still too up and down

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

25K Great Britain:
R1 d. (WC) Isabelle Wallace GBR (#1269, top 50 junior) 6-7(5) 6-3 6-3
R2 l. to (8) Ana Vrljic CRO (#232) 6-3 5-7 2-6
The scheduling was ridiculous. There was a lot of rain and Despina had to play her 3-set R1 match early that day, then they had her play her doubles match, and then her 3-set R2 match. So Despina had three long matches in one day and Vrljic only had one. Pretty bad luck for Despina as she was clearly tired in the end. Still though, good that she showed she could beat Vrljic, and she probably would've won if she wasn't so tired

Despina did reach the doubles final here, which I believe was her first time at a 25K level!

15K Germany:
R1 l. to (Q) Magdalena Frech POL (#730) 4-6 6-3 5-7
Frech then went on to beat (1) Alexandrova (#252), so I guess not such a bad loss

She reached the doubles SF here but lost to eventual champions (1) Perrin/Simmonds 1-6 5-7

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

25K Great Britain:
R1 l. to (7) Diana Marcinkevica LAT (#239) 2-6 2-6
Not surprising since Marcinkevica is known for playing well on indoor hard

Doubles with Camilla Rosatello ITA, seeded fourth
R1 BYE
QF vs. Cavaday GBR/Stephenson GBR

Despina lost in singles but in to doubles final with Lina, they play against Sramkova/Terziyska....good chance for the 25k doubles title!

Congrats to them for their title! Also Despina lost 5 and 6 in singles R2 to Kan (#212) so not a bad loss at all

Good if she does. Her ranking fell down to 400 so she could use the cheap points
Especially since her WTA Luxembourg and 75K Dubai points are coming off soon

That's such a good idea that she's playing here.

A lot of points she can grab and not much competition. I wonder why more players don't do it.
