Re: FIRST NAMES - Help Needed

The following list of female German tennis players is taken from the "Amtliches Tennis-Hand- und Jahrbuch"/"Official Tennis Handbook and Annual" published for the year 1938 by the German Tennis Association in its new form under Nazi rule.

If a player's name is preceded by the word "Frau", this indicates that she was married at the time (however, this might not have been so in every such case). Sometimes a player's maiden name is not included.

Austrian players who had "become German" as a result of the "Anschluss" in March 1938 are indicated by inclusion of the city they formerly represented.

The players are listed in alphabetical order.

There's a marriage in 1909 in Essex, England, between Edward Henry Burgess Smith and either Victoria Oppenheimer or Ella Elizabeth Prentis(s).

Re: FIRST NAMES - Help Needed

Apparently Miss Abercrombie's first name did not begin with "H.", but this player's identity still remains to be identified. She probably came from Cheltenham, where she was a member of the local lawn tennis club.

Re: FIRST NAMES - Help Needed

In his most recent book, on the early decades of lawn tennis on the French Riviera, Alan Little includes a first name for Miss M. Brooksmith. However, I couldn't find any such person in any of the records (nor could a genealogist contact). The name Alan Little includes was, in fact, the most likely person's second name.

Based on the few facts may I tentatively suggest Victoria Burgess-Smith (formerly Victoria Oppenheimer) - born 6 July 1887 in Hendon?

Great find. The "Miss Coles" who appears in some British tournaments in the 1920s was Mildred Coles Davis.
