Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

Ouch! Mirjana vs. Bojana is scheduled as 2nd match on court 1 tomorrow. That's a quick turnaround-time, considering today's 3-hr. extravaganza.

No rest for the weary, I guess.

Here's hoping for the best, but no matter what, she'll go into RG with some regained pride & self-belief, at least.

Great effort already in Strasbourg, Miki.

Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

Typical drama from Mirjana: from 76 and practically 41 to 76 46 25 but then to 76 46 75

So happy she beat Zheng

This. So cruel of the organizers to make her play tomorrow, and so early on in the day's program. Cruel to anyone who played for three hours but even more so to Mirjana, who at age 32 practically needs a walker to get around.

Indeed. Weather for Strasbourg reports, however, almost perfect tennis conditions for the day. Warm but not too warm ... zero rain. Maybe if she can somehow get this one win, she would have a day off to recoup. But beating Bojana would seem to be a very tough order.

Have fun calling the match on the live scores thread, everyone. I'll be asleep but hopefully dreaming of a win.

Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

No day off even if she wins today, because they want to end tournament on Saturday. Sunday is already 1st round of French Open.
Quite stpuid, they should have started qualies on Friday, like they did in Germany. Or have only two rounds.

Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

Quite the nice surprise to wake up and see that Lucic has scored her fourth win in a row on this Strasbourg clay, snagging a pretty big upset/Top 60 win in the process! There might be enough points to just pop her back into the Top 100.

Now she tries her hand against Puig, of whom I know nothing. Great win, ML-B!

Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

Normally I'd say this is enough. Get some rest for the French Open. But in this case, no, she should seize the moment to try and go deep here. This is a great opportunity. Puig is a solid player on all surfaces. She lost to Sharapova 6-3 7-5 last week in Rome. If Mirjana's not totally spent she can compete with her though in this good form she obviously has now. The match today was very short so hopefully the cumulative effect of the 3 hr match yesterday and playing 5 days in a row (that's a lot) doesn't hit her tomorrow.

I rather agree that a player like Miki needs to seize the day whenever she finds herself in form. There are no guarantees that she would even win a single match in Paris. After all, she could draw Serena or Maria in the first round at Roland Garros. Serena and Maria, on the other hand, could afford to tank warm-up matches in small events so they could be fresh as daisies and well-settled into their suites at the Ritz-Carlton, Champs-Élysées for the start of the French Open.

Miki does need to grab the apple and run with it, so to speak, no matter where she might be, whenever she might be there.

Important right now is a lot of good physio work, stretching, and probably a very long (but not too long) massage to keep her musculature in optimum condition for tomorrow. I don't know what to expect against Puig. I really don't. Not after playing five consecutive days. Of course, Miki has won ITF events having played five consecutive matches, so, not out of the picture. But even though I guess I don't expect her to beat Puig, she has done a wonderful RG preparation, here. The rest of the week she can knock around with a bit of doubles, then ease on up the road to Paris and hopefully get that Grand Slam main draw win on clay once again!

Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

Has anyone noticed she won 16/18 points on second serve when she got it in?
A bad day from Bojana, but a sing also that Mirjana was very focused.

Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

Mirjana really needs to fight for every match. When she does face Puig, she needs to get in the lead immediately. I don't care if she does lose against Puig, but she needs to try her hardest no matter what.

Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

Mirjana completely destroyed Jovanovski 6-4 6-0 !

Top 40 win. I hope Mirjana keeps going and reaches Strasbourg QF

Re: Mirjana's Campaign to Conquer Clay in 2014!

After 20 minutes of watching Puig on clay against Venus this year, there is some advice for Miss Miki:

Attack Puig's forehand hard on serve and off the ground. Avoid any short replies to Puig's backhand. It's clearly her money shot, esp. the sharply angled crosscourt ripper.

Good luck.
