As I said in the live scores thread. I'm not that affected by Serena loses anymore.
It was probably hard not get your hopes up of her winning that first set at 4-1* or that second set at 2*-0 40/15. But the reality is that I won't get that hopeful until is set point/match point. Her recent loses to Serena were a good indicator, the Miami final of last year while a set & break up. The second set of the Madrid final being up a break in the second. The second set of their Brisbane SF, and even when she had 5-4 in the TB with two serves to come.
I LOVED the way Maria started the match. As many of you stated, even if Serena's footwork was lazy. Maria did a great job serving like shit and managing to save two break points in her first two service games. That forehand was clicking, the backhand not so much.
She started with a similar mentality in the second. However, she shots herself in the foot when things go wrong or has THAT mental lapse that ends up killing her at the end. That game at 4*-2 she made three errors, three very sloppy errors. As soon as Serena serve-botted her way to make it 4-4. You could tell Maria has lost the intensity and started to doubt again. She got broken, and we all know Serena for the most part serves well in critical moments. The same when she lead early in the second. She had SO MANY chances (4 or 5 game points I believe) to make it 3-0 and just didn't take them. The serve was a huge liability, and a big difference like always. I really do hope there's nothing wrong with her shoulder.
The rest is history, when she doubts herself and with Serena never backing down against her then that's just a horrible combo.
At least she managed to make up for the IW disaster. She didn't play well in this tournament but I'll take it cause she fought through it and we all saw it.
I'll take things slowly given how this year has been so far. Match by match. Even if her seedings for Stuttgart, Rome, and Madrid will be shit in terms of what we've been used to the last couple of years. She has shown that she's no easy match for anyone on the dirt. This is someone who has reached the FO final the last two years, enough said.
I am hopeful for the clay season. *Fingers crossed*
