Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Fine, Mary Etta
United States
Born 1924
Died 2007

Mary Etta Fine won the women's singles title at the American Tennis Championships in 1958 but, as the following article states, was rather overshadowed by Althea Gibson:

"African-American tennis trailblazer Mary Etta Fine dies

"African-American tennis trailblazer and Kansas City native Mary Etta Fine passed away in late August. Fine was instrumental to helping the game grow in the African-American community in Kansas City and was one of the first top African-American female players from the region.

"Mary Etta Fine was born in April 1924 and started playing tennis as a 16-year-old. She took to the sport almost instantly. Fine and her sister Eva were two of the early stalwarts of the American Tennis Association tour, which helped to promote African-American tennis before blacks were accepted at local clubs, and until the United States Lawn Tennis Association (now the USTA) desegregated in the 1950's.

"Fine was a terrific player, winning the American Tennis Association National Women's Singles title in 1958 and teamed with her brother, Leo, to capture the ATA National Mixed Doubles Championship in 1951. During the ATA events, she always seemed to face a very tough competitor in Althea Gibson. Althea defeated Mary Etta several times, including a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the 1951 ATA Women's Singles Championship.

"Fine was a graduate of Pittsburgh State Teachers College and received her Master's in Education from University of Missouri-Kansas City. She was a teacher in the Kansas City public school system for 43 years. Fine was also a terrific sportswoman. She once bowled a 299 game, and excelled at table tennis and baseball as well. Fine is a member of the Heart of America District's Tennis Hall of Fame (inducted in 2002), along with her sister Eva Bracy Fine.

"Fine is survived by two younger sisters, Eva Bracy and Sophia Lawson, two nieces, one nephew and several other cousins. Memorial services were held August 24."

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

FRETZ, TORY ANN
United States
Born 8 August 1942

Tory Fretz was a contemporary of Billie Jean King and Nancy Richey, who was ranked #4 in the US in 1966. She won the Western Championships over Julie Heldman in 1962, and the Dixie Championships over Judy Alvarez in 1965. Also in 1965, she reached the final of the prestigious Pacific Southwest tournament where she lost of Carole Graebner. Her career best Slam singles result was a round of 16 loss to Kerry Reid near the end of her career in 1974.

Tory reached the mixed doubles final at the US Open in 1967 with Gerry Perry, and the 1965 women's doubles semifinals with Julie Heldman in 1965.

Serious falls led to multiple surgeries on both knees, but Fretz had multiple comebacks. She reached several quarterfinals in Slims events in 1974 which included wins over Francoise Durr and Heldman. In her 1974 Wimbledon run, she defeated Greer Stevens and Wendy Turnbull. She also played with Billie Jean King for the Philadelphia Freedoms in 1974. In 1976, Tory reached a Futures semifinal and qualified again for the Slims tour where she reached the second round twice.

Fretz was an outspoken member of the tour, and once commented that she would continue to play on the tour until she was 106 if she could. Fretz stayed involved in tennis until age 66 as a teaching pro. She was struck by a valet and later received a $7 million settlement for her injuries.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

HELDMAN, JULIE
United States
Born 8 December 1945
Married Bernard L. Weiss, 30 May 1981

Julie Heldman was born into a tennis family. Her father Julius was a leading player in the 1930s and 40s. Mom Gladys was a former player who founded World Tennis magazine and helped give birth to the Virginia Slims tour.
Julie won the Canadian 18 and under singles in 1958 at age 12 and later won the US girls 15s and 18s titles. Over her career Julie won over 20 singles titles. She was ranked among America's top players for her entire career and reached a career high world ranking of #5 in 1969. She was a part of two victorious Federation Cup teams in 1966 and 1969. In 1970, Julie was one of the Original Nine who signed $1 contracts and joined the Virginia Slims tour.

Heldman's earliest singles wins came at Atlanta and Cincinnati in 1962. Whereas many of her contemporaries stayed closer to home, Julie traveled widely and won tournaments in many locations especially early her career. For instance, she toured Europe and won at Brussels, Naples, and Reggio Calabria in 1965. She also won tournaments in Switzerland, Argentina, Canada, Wales, England, Sweden, and the Soviet Union.

1969 was clearly Heldman's best year. She defeated #1 Margaret Court twice early in the year and won tournaments at Curacao (beating Court and Nancy Richey), Barranquilla (defeating Lesley Turner, Virginia Wade, and Peaches Bartkowicz), and Fort Lauderdale (defeating a very young Chris Evert, Court and Wade). She won the biggest event of her career at the Italian Open where she defeated #2 seed Lesley Turner Bowrey, #3 Ann Jones and Kerry Melville. She was ranked #5 for the year.

At Slam events, Julie reached the quarterfinals or better on nine different occasions and reached the semifinals of the Australian (1974 - her only appearance there), the French (1970), and the US (1974). She was a semifinalist three times in women's doubles Slam events (1965 US with Tory Fretz, 1966 French with Ann Haydon, and 1974 Australian with Judy Dalton).

From 1973 to 1975, Julie provided commentary for the U.S. Open on CBS Television, at the same time authoring articles for various publications, including her mother’s magazine, World Tennis. From 1975 to 1977, she was a member of the NBC Wimbledon telecast team. Covering the Avis Challenge Cup Tournament for NBC in 1976, Julie became the first woman to provide commentary on a men’s tennis event.

Julie is a member of the Stanford University Athletic Hall of Fame, the National and International Jewish Sports Halls of Fame, the ITA Women's Hall of Fame and the USTA Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame.
Heldman married Bernie Weiss in 1981 and has one daughter Amy Rebecca (b. 1987).

This American player, active in 1930s, appears sometimes as Mae Ceurvost and sometimes as Mae Cuervost.

Which is her real surname?
