Re: Official Australian Open 2014: New Season, New Coach, 'New Shoulder' and New Slam

That was way too close at the end.
I hope her shoulder is feeling alright, she wasn't serving very hard today at all.

Glad she's in the 4th round though. But if she doesn't improve, she won't make the QF's.

I've commented on this before, but that serve is unpredicatable for a reason. It will NEVER be consistent ever again, especially after the surgery which means permenant nerve damage. She will have problems on it forever, sometimes it will look awesome, sometimes it will look very bad. She will just need to deal with it, but more match play can help keep the serve a bit more under control. I think she just needs to keep working and keep playing matches, it will come back to her sooner or later.

Re: Official Australian Open 2014: New Season, New Coach, 'New Shoulder' and New Slam

Up until 5:3, 5:4 in the second, I was getting ready to write-this match was just what the doctor ordered after that last round. And then Maria decided to take care of things and let that sentence be anything but true. The first set IMO was as clinical as Maria can play, she showed some excellent variety, beautiful shots from the baseline. Second set... What was up with her BH? She had that game when she blew 0:40 and basically butchered that shot, and then there were all those amazing winners from that wing as well (especially CC), although they kind of died down as the match progressed, and it once again, just as it was against Knapp, became more of a liability than a weapon. FH was actually more consistent in this match, to my great surprise. Another thing, I don't know what percentage she ended up with, but to have 40% of first serves in at one point? No words can describe that level of abysmal serving

Anyway, it's great that she ended up winning in straights, after another case of epic brain farting (I hate the expression, but it's more than fitting to be used here). What worries me is the fact that she is failing to capitalize big time on a lot of her opportunities (that 0:40 game, where she literally shocked Cornet back from the dead, serving for the match twice, with DFs looming over our heads), then almost blowing being 4:2 up in the TB). She can get away with it for now, but against a first serious opponent, it'll come back to bite her in the ass. Not to mention that it took her about 30 mins longer to finish her match for the second time in a row.

Couple of things that I do cherish from this match: that BH stop volley, the FH slice and FH volley combo, one huge C'mon shriek, and that FH slice on Cornet's set point that totally slayed me

And one final side note, CSN is such a useless scrub, I mean who can allow themselves to be bageled+a breadstick against Cibulkova? Anyway, I expect Maria to win the next one hopefully with a better level altogether, and then we'll see, she has a good shot at the semis here, but I don't know what to make of her game, and more importantly, of her mental state, the lapses that she's making are just too big to ignore.

Ok, rant over.

Good first set but god awful in the second. Her serve has been dire this whole tournament .

She really needs to pick it up or she won't last very long.

Maria had nothing in the tank today after the Knapp match. She could have easily lost 1-6 0-6 like Navarro, but she didn't. She lives to fight another day.

The question is whether she will recover by Monday, when she plays Cibulkova. Otherwise, Cibulkova will beat a very tired Maria 6-0 6-1, like 2009 RG.

My gut feeling is Maria will be at least 80%, instead of 25% (today), and will put up a good fight.

I need to take another mental rest after that 2nd set I wouldn't want to imagine if she lost that 2nd set though

Maria has had troubles serving it out two matches in a row, 2 times today too. That's not good and a little worrying. She really needs to step it up because Domi is not an easy opponent. Hope Maria prepares well and comes out firing.

Re: Official Australian Open 2014: New Season, New Coach, 'New Shoulder' and New Slam

Her grondstroke is inconsistent, sometime It's really good but sometime It's really bad, but I'm ok with her groundstroke
But the most thing I worry is Maria's serve
Average 1st serve speed goes down from 162KMH(1st round),161KMH(2nd Round) to 153KMH in 3rd round
Average 2nd serve speed goes down from 147KMH(1st round),148KMH(2nd Round) to 141KMH in 3rd round
Hopefully She can recovery 100% in next match

Maria from the 2nd set today better not show on Monday. Anyway she will not be the favorite in the 4th round.

Don't know hot to do that whole quote thing, so I'll just post it like this.

Matt Cronin ‏@TennisReporters 1m
Sharapova is so upset with her play that she's gone out to practice, which is almost unheard 4 her.

Well, at least it's nice to hear she's not satisfied with all the fuckery she's been displaying, and she's actually trying to do something about it

Oh don't worry. In 09 RG, Maria had to play 4 3-setters in the first 4 rounds before meeting Domi, she of course didn't have anything left in the tank. And that was way back in 09. Maria physically is in a much better shape now, and she only plays 1 tough 3-setter. She will be fine.

Physically, Maria had a little something in the 1st set but nothing left in the 2nd set. It's a miracle she won.

Remember, she ony finished that 3 hours 28 minutes match in 42C temperature 46 hours ago.

For some reason she seems to put a lot of pressure on herself here. I hope that she'll be able to let go of that now that she's made the second week.

Chibikova can take her out if she doesn't improve, on the other hand, Chibikova could totally blow herself up as well.

I hope Maria's able to recover well and rest up.

Re: Official Australian Open 2014: New Season, New Coach, 'New Shoulder' and New Slam

I'm not gonna bother dragging. I guess being tight is normalish when you're playing pretty poor AND haven't won many matches since May/June '13.

Ground game has looked strong in most parts so far, just needs to manage to keep it up for more than a set and a bit. The serve stance, when she hits it well it looks really good. They need to address the toss though, she's bending her knees more and keeping the toss at usual height (if not higher). Mistiming or just too far ahead and collapsing on it. Once they tweak it I think it could be great. I highly doubt any significant improvement will happen here though.

We'll just have to see how this tournament turns out tbh.

Yeah, I know that fatigue played an important part, I thought even her groundies were a little bit slower than her usual bashing of the ball, plus obviously the serve. But, I still don't think that's an excuse for blowing up those chances towards the end of the second set. She was very lucky that she was not punished with a third set for them. I generally had a feeling that even if it went to a third, she was gonna prevail in the end, but the cost would have just been too great for the next round(s).

Also, I can't help but notice how tight she is and more nervous than usual. I wonder whether it's because she believes she has something to prove after the time off?
