Kvitova cruises into Sydney quarters

Quote:
Kvitova was keen for revenge after a difficult three set loss to the American at Indian Wells last year.
“I played great in the first set (in Indian Wells), and then I was dropping off, as many times in my career. I just was really into the game today and I was thinking about every point in the second set very strongly and trying to be still in game and still be one who’s making the game,” she said.

Re: Petra Kvitova News and Articles

First interview after her 1st round loss at the Aussi Open for the Czech radio:
http://www.rozhlas.cz/zpravy/tenis/_...razce--1302603

She says that there were no signs of this. She trained well, felt good, played couple of good matches and didn't know it is gonna be that bad. She said that her opponent played very unpleasantly for her, she didn't know her at all but she admits that it wasn't about her opponent. She says it was her head today, it was blocked because she put big pressure on her self.
She was expecting a lot after good matches and preparation and was looking for playing there but doesn't really know why it wasn't going her way. She says that she doesn't know what happened there (this is the title of the article in Czech).
She says that she wants to rest from tennis for a while and that Fed Cup is far away. She wasn't really thinking about her next schedule yet
.

I hope this was just a fluke and that it doesn't mean that there is another crappy 2013 season ahead of us.

Re: Petra Kvitova News and Articles

Interview for sport.cz:
Quote:

She admits that she wasn't playing well, "everything was wrong - shots, serve, movement", she says. Here is copy of that article, I don't have time to translate it unfortunately but you can use Google translate or something like that if you want.

This sort of comment always comes across as churlish, but I suppose if you say the other thing it comes across as deluded--you pays your money, you takes your choice.

I take it this means something like "brain freeze", rather than how I initially interpreted it, that she had a cold and was blocked up?!

Re: Petra Kvitova News and Articles

I think what she meant with 'blocked' is that given her past results in AO (where she underachieved, given her past year result and her SF loss against Sharpie), she put a lot of pressure in herself that she self-destructed in the process. She wanted to have a good showing in AO but got entangled in her thinking (too many expectations), albeit being aware that she can play superbly well on a good day, but again putting too much pressure on herself. Hopefully, she'll learn from this unexpected loss and be able to get that mental balance in her future matches, especially in AO where she can get far in the draw, given the surface. Also, given her top-10 status, she should be able to detach herself from this pressure by now because she is a top-ten player for over two years and a grandslam champion. I mean, this gal can play lights out tennis when in a carefree state (flashback against Mchale a week ago, Dubai last year) but implodes when faced with tension. For me, this is not a problem of poor footwork, abysmal serve or horrendous ROS, these are the aftermath of her mental turmoil and the inability to cope with tension/pressure.

Agreed, that is what I think she thinks it was (if that makes any sense at all ).
I think that of course, she is a top ten player for some time now, but she had bad season with some terrible results on Grand Slam tournaments - last results were: AO13 - 2r, RG13 - 3r, W13 - (lucky) Qf, USO - (terrible) 3r (loss) and now AO14 - 1r. I think that speaks for it self.

Hi everyone,

The first-round loss at the Australian Open was very tough for me because I was expecting more from myself. I worked so hard in the off-season and that’s why I felt so nervous, because I wanted it too much. It took some days to get over it, normally I bounce back pretty quickly but this one hurt.

I wanted to play Paris to keep playing matches and forget about Australia as fast as possible, but unfortunately I was sick and couldn’t use my wild card there. I was so sick that I also didn’t play Fed Cup – it was so weird because it was the first time I hadn’t played. I was watching on live score and I was very nervous – it’s much better when you’re playing, that’s why I’m looking forward to the semifinal at home.

They were tough days for me and I knew I wouldn’t be in good shape when I went to Doha and Dubai. I just practiced for three days before Doha so it was great that I won two matches, after big fights, and I was just feeling happy to be back.

I didn’t defend my title in Dubai. I don’t know exactly what happened. I played so well in the first set against Carla (Suarez Navarro), but the match was getting longer and longer, the night was getting cooler and the balls were not flying as much. The rallies got longer and she started playing really well – I had some chances to finish the match but she came back and in the end it was just about a few points. In Doha I won matches like that, and in Dubai I lost.

It was definitely a mental battle. If I know I am practicing well, it translates to the court. At this moment, I really wanted to win so it can be really frustrating because I know that I can play well.

Thankfully I have really great fans and they sent me a lot of nice messages after the match. It’s not when you are winning, but you see the real fans when you are losing. I have the best fans in the world, they understand sport and are still believing in me no matter what.

So now I will head to Indian Wells. The running machine has been my best friend for the past few days at home, and I have been practicing every day with David. I have no pain and I am not ill so fingers crossed! Indian Wells is a beautiful tournament and the weather is great. The courts there are quite slow so I will get there early and spend a lot of time getting used to the courts. I have heard there is a Nobu on site there so I’m looking forward to trying it. Hope to see some of you there!

Wimbledon nitwit writer thinks Petra is from Poland, and repeats the error multiple times in the article.
