6-1 6-3 over Duval. Pretty much as anticipated

Another match against Kerber now.

Re: Kaia Kanepi Cheering Thread!!!

I am actually considering going again. It was nice today and she was great afterwards. There was this Estonian woman that said thanks and Kaia smiled so I was going to talk to her for a bit maybe but I was distracted by antics on another court so I just got her signature and didn't even say anything Estonian She will have to wait for tomorrow or AO

Interesting discussion about Estonian names on last page !

I remember Estonian Fed Cup captain Rene Busch. That`s a German surname.
Also Jürgen Zopp has a German surname. Erika Hendsel, Anett Schutting too.

I also found many Estonian former WTA players on ITF site with German surname: Birgit Burk, Kristina Grünberg, Helene Holter, Barbara Kvelstein, Sandra Kvelstein, Helina Lill, Katri Miller, Monica Peets, Heike-Brit Ross, Merike Stamberg. BTW "Berg" = "mountain".

Estonian former ATP players with German surname I found on ITF site are: Rauno Gull, Allar Hint, Alexsander Jürgens, Sven Kasper, Markus Kerner, Mikhel Koppel, Peeter Lamp, Hendrik Lutter, Heggert Meier, Redt Reimal, Simmo Sommer, Sten Sumberg, Kaarel Tramm, Gert Vilms, Fredi Voormann, Viljar Zilmer.

Kontaveit could be an Estonian surname

As far as I know Kontaveit is not a German surname. At least I have never heard this surname here. I also have not heard anything similar.

Definitely an interesting topic

A convincing start for Kaia at Sydney !

R2 vs Kerber. I hate when my faves play each other. May the better win

I'd guess Estonians have a bit of German in them, after all Germans were here about 700 years, lot's of time to mix some blood

It's quite interesting with the surnames, Estonians got them in 1800s, some could make their own choice, some were given by Germans, and since they were also written down by Germans, some Estonian words could look not like Estonian words. And over time there were some letters lost, some added, some changed. And there was a period from 1935 till the Soviet occupation where people could change their names more easily than before.

I don't know with surnames, but for example a person was born as Kustaw, died as Konstantin.

Re: Kaia Kanepi Cheering Thread!!!

Yeah well Kaia lost 3 and 4 and apparently lost 4 of her 7 Service Points at 4*-5

I am now sad I didn't go Anyway, hopefully I'll see her in Melbourne Onwards and Upwards

Still, I don't know shy she has trouble with Kerber on Hardcourts... She really could have won this and the way she played Yesterday compared to all the other Women I saw, the tournament...

Waiting for your report against Duval!

By the stats 2nd set was probably a good display from both. Shame Kaia had to have the short end this time

Well, next tournament is the more important one.

kerber is left-handed, that's why. i don't think she would admit to it, but kaia's record vs top lefties is no good. losing H2H against makarova and kvitova as well.

I expected a tougher match b/w these two. too bad kaia is out already. on the positive side she now can focus on the AO.

a few of the above names have a meaning and are used in everyday estonian, e.g. lill, koppel, rüütel, lamp. some of these are outright swedish names, e.g. sumberg, stamberg. but I agree that there are a lot of german names here. kontaveit to me is an estonianised name, one of her predecessors must be one of the 200k estonians changing their name in the 1930ies.

For example from Einmann to Eenmaa or just purely through translation like Grauberg to Hallimäe etc.
