Unfortunately, no, it's definetely Ana

This is nothing in compare to Roland Garros 2007 SF when she destroyed Maria

Re: Ana's serve, then and now

Oh and I still like Ana's motion even these days. It has a nice easy flow. I wish I could copy it actually, but it's a bit late to change my own serve just so it looks like Ana's. I wish it did though!

Re: Ana's serve, then and now

Yes, I must agree that she has beautiful technique of serving, and all her motions and strokes are beautiful...

At the end she made 225 aces this season, which is 5th best result this season, so her serve is still good enough

According to this very good and useful research (I show here for every category just TOP15 and Ana), Ana very improve hers return game in 2013 compared to previous 2012 season - but there is no any real benefits from that fact simple because hers own serve performances was clearly worse than in 2012... so in general, she has almost copycat season despite all return improvements (but hers serve goes worse).

Those are some very very interesting stats Cp6uja, thanks for that!

Besides the info you comment on, I also realized Ana is around 20 in almost all stats.. so she is approprietely ranked in real rankings.. she needs to up these stats to be anything more than a irrelevant journeywoman.

Thanks, Cp6uja. Does anyone have Ana's statistics from 2007-2008? I'd like to see how good Ana's service game used to be...

Quite similar, except for the aces/double fault per 100 serves stats
I love statistics! as Mark Twain said

For example with 70% percent of 1st serve points won from 2007 Ana will be #6 in 2013 instead #21 with 67%. With 48% winning points on 2nd serve she will be #10 instead #22 with 47%, and with 74% service games won from 2007 she will be #4 in that category in 2013, instead #18 with 70%... etc... Also don't forget that Ana's 2007 season before amazing claycourt May's breakthrough (Berlin title, RG final) was pretty mediocre (she is around #15 in YEC RACE).

But also, fact is that hers return game stats is much better in 2013 than in 2012, and very similar (even slightly better!) like for 2007 season which she finished like TOP5 player. To make improvement in 2014 Ana should to continue to improve hers return game stats, or to hold them on current level with recovering hers serve stats at least on 2012 level. In general, Ana's 2013 serve stats are one of worst she ever have for some season, but hers return game stats are probably second best ever (after golden May2007-June2008 period).

I do know, i do know don't take what i said seriously. I was only joking ("Lies, damned lies, and statistics") about these stats:

2007-2012
Fault on second serve 12%-13%
First serve 57%-56%
First serve point won 70%-69%
Second serve point won 48%-48%
Service point won 60%-60%

Quote:

That's all right. These stats are very interesting, they show that Ana's appropriately ranked, but don't tell the whole story. I mean... in these stats first point of the match has the same value of the last one. When Ana stops choking, her stats instantaneously will be better.

Re: Ana's serve, then and now

Speaking of her serve motion, we've seen worse...

Quote:
Q. How comfortable are you with your shortened service motion?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, well, another reason I did that was to protect my shoulder, because I started having some pains, so that's why I abbreviated the motion. I feel a lot better and I think my speed has gone up. Last couple of tournaments I used this motion and I feel a lot better, actually, a lot more safe with my serve. And then obviously my shoulder didn't -- I didn't feel any problems with it.
I could serve faster, but it's been only a few weeks. But, you know, maybe once my shoulder gets stronger again, I can go back to the normal movement.

Q. With a different motion on your serve, doesn't that throw a different element into your toss?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, actually, it helps my toss, because it's abbreviated, so then I feel like I can control it much more. It's coming smoother rather than, you know, having lots of different like aspects of the serve. So I think my toss has become a lot better with this new movement.

Q. What's difficult about the toss, anyway? Seems not to be a difficult part of the game.
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, serve should be the easiest part, because the only shot you control completely. Yeah, it's -- I think it just -- it's very hard to describe, because what happens is that sometimes when I toss, I either release too early or I flick it and I release too late. It's just so hard to describe. It's like, you know, I tried also to do exercises with heavier ball so I get more feel for it. I mean now it's feeling better so I worked on that.

Q. Is it possible you could be thinking about it too much?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I think I've been thinking about everything too much and trying to address lots of issues with my game, and at the moment I feel like I have a plan in place and I know what I have to do in each area of my game. But just at the moment I think it's a little disbalanced. My fitness is at one level, mind at another, my game is at another level. I think these all these things have to marry to get into the right direction and have to fit.

First serve 57%-56%
First serve point won 70%-69%
Second serve point won 48%-48%
Service point won 60%-60%

That's all right. These stats are very interesting, they show that Ana's appropriately ranked, but don't tell the whole story. I mean... in these stats first point of the match has the same value of the last one. When Ana stops choking, her stats instantaneously will be better.
IF stops choking sounds more appropriate. We've been waiting for 5 years..

Re: Ana's serve, then and now

While we still waiting for Ana's serve progress (comeback), we can still enjoy on hers amazing improvement of serve-return skills which started previous season!

She broke in very important matches this season Venus Williams and Samantha Stosur 4 times both, which is both arguable (at least) TOP10 best servers in history of women's tennis!
After 5 days of AO-2014 Ana is WTA leading player in "Break points won" category (18), 2nd best in "1st serve return points" (72) and one of best in "Break point conversions" (18/25=72%)!

Unfortunately, Ana's next opponent is WTA GOAT and all-time best server Serena Williams, so maybe all this improvements will not be enough for just 3rd Serena's lose in last 10 months (1st since August), but anyway, this progress already deserved to be noted as crucial for Ana's great start of 2014 season.

AMAZING BELGRADE MIRACLE: In just three years (2008-2011) 5 different players born in same city reach world #1 in rankings and several GS titles and finals (WTA singles: Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, ATP singles: Novak Djokovic, ATP doubles: Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor... with notable performances of Bojana Jovanovski, Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki which is also all three born in Belgrade)
