Re: 2013 XWTA/ Tennisforum Awards! Come in & vote!

Here are my choices and reasons; I did not make a choice in some categories as I did not contemplate sufficiently to render a true decision.

Player of the year:
Serena! Can’t argue with her impressive record for this year.

Surprise of the year:
Victoria Duval’s 1st rd defeat of Sam Stosur at the USO. I cannot recall ever a more stunning upset in women’s tennis.

Disappointment of the year:
Sabine’s loss to Marion for the Wimbledon title.

Comeback player of the year:
Jelena Jankovic! It seemed to me that she was losing routinely and could always be counted on to lose to one’s favs. But she beat Sabine (a personal surprise) and ended up in the Top 10 and even qualified for the YEC.

Grand slam match of the year:
Sabine defeating Aga-Wimbledon SF. Clearly one of the most exciting matches ever: excellent shots executed by both players. A very high quality match!

Most dramatic match of the year:
Lisicki’s victory over Serena at Wimbledon. The ebb and flow continuously between advantage and disadvantage to each player I daresay kept fans of each player alternating between agony and ecstasy throughout the match. The ultimate climax being first MP for Sabine denied and Serena winning the next point as well to have BP advantage to tie the match but then Sabine prevailing by winning three points in a row. Whew!

Best Non-Grand Slam match of the year:
Vika defeating Serena at Cincinnati. Serena wins first set convincingly making you wonder how Vika is even in the match. Vika wins second set convincingly and the third set comes down to a tie-breaker. Serena on the tenth point hits long at a wide open court an UE that she would not make ten times out of ten and half was the factual difference in the outcome of the match.

Most overrated match of the year:
Sloane Stephens defeating Serena at AO. Sloane’s victory seemed to herald a changing of the guard in American women’s tennis. Much was made by TV commentators that this was Serena’s first loss to an American player younger than her. As the year progressed the result of this match lost all of its initially perceived significance.

Tournament of the year:
Wimbledon. I remember in the days of Steffi’s era when routinely each of the top four seeds of a slam reached the semi finals depriving any excitement for the early rounds. This year prior to the tournament I’m almost certain no media tennis pundit nor any poster on this board considered Marion as being a serious factor. Likewise at best Sabine was considered an extreme dark horse in having a chance. When Maria and Vika were felled in the second round Petra Kvitova was viewed as having secured a berth in the finals. But Petra narrowly escaped defeat at the hands of Makarova benefitting from an overnight match suspension right at the time Ekaterina was in a midst of a winning streak with all the momentum with her. Karma struck in the QFs as Petra was ignominiously dismissed by the flash in the pan Kirsten Flipkens who in turn was decisively beaten in the SFs by Marion proving if anything that she had no business in advancing so far. Sloane must have disheartened her fans with her QF loss to Marion when experiencing a bizarre exchange of consecutive multiple service breaks in the second set. One can feel pity for Aga as well since arguably she had her best chance ever of winning a slam once Sabine eliminated Serena. Then there was Sabine! As a fan I was thrilled by her run. Disappointed of course she lost to Marion but I guess that is the pitfall of cheering for her.

Performance of the year:
Serena’s victory over Na Li in the USO semi final. Considering what a tremendously good year Na Li enjoyed this year, Serena’s mastery over her in this match was truly a shocking jolt.

Houdini/comeback of the year:
Although not a complete comeback, Marion’s recovery from a 5-0 (which was a culmination of a nine game losing streak dating from up 3-2 in the second set) deficit in the third set against Ekaterina Makarova in the 3rd rd of the AO ranks as the most remarkable in this category. She broke Ekaterina twice in the comeback to get the set score onto even serve score but then got broken herself in the tenth game to lose the set and match.

Outcome of a match you would like to change:
Obviously, I would have wished Sabine to have defeated Marion for the Wimbledon title.

Worst choke of the year:
I do not recognize this category as legitimate and I feel strongly enough on this point to make such comment.

Retired player you will miss the most:
Marion! Although I was not one of her fans, I did usually cheered for her against most opponents and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her unorthodox serve motion and her antics between points. The fact that these two latter points were a source of irritants to most self proclaimed tennis purists herein made me enjoy this aspect of her game even more. The strange outward appearance and apparently curious relationship with her father as coach and fan made her absolutely stand out from the run of the mill players on tour.

Your wishes for 2014:
Sabine to win Wimbledon.

Everything felt really sloppy to me. The scheduling was horrible, the court surfaces were very poorly managed and resulted in several injuries, the helpers seemed absolutely clueless at times and like SerenaMJ said even the gift shop just stocked with stuff from last year. It was like they higher end a bunch of college students who procrastinated till the very last minute and then threw a bunch of stuff together to make something.

On a personal level, apart from djokovic, I really like all the other finalists so I still enjoyed the championships.
