Did Pierce, Golovin, Seles, Kournikova, Safina and Capriati ever OFFICIALLY retire?

Not sure if it had been posted anywhere on the boards, but I am curious to know if these players ever made an official announcement to retire? If so, how long did it take them after they played their last match? If not, why have they not announced retirement?

Do you know if she made an official announcement? And how long after her last match? What was her last match?

The queens who "officially retire" always come back: Justine, Kim, Julian. and probably Marion too.

Her last match was against Petrova in Paris in 2003. After that she did not play because of a foot injury. She made an official announcement after there has been rumours about a comeback-tournament in Miami. Must have been six (?) years after her last match..

If you have endorsement deals, some players dont want them to close down. Especially if they think they might be back after a rehab from an injury.

I'm surprised by the recent retirements. Bartoli had just put herself in position to make some easy $, and she cut it off (for now).

She may have a high I.Q but her retirement was about the dumbest thing I have seen in WTA. It was a complete emotion based head-less decision. Now she is about to come back already after less than a month.

Yeah, I remember that time because I was so happy that she considered to return to competition (although I was sure that it was going to be messy..)

I looked it up btw.: she played her last match in May 2003 and retired in 2007 (not in 2009 as posted above, sorry) right before Miami..

Has Vera Zvonareva retired already? I haven't heard about her in forever. Also, the other Russians sans Sharapova.

Still 4 years later is a long time.... Probably still had contracts/endorsements in place and wanted to milk them up. This is why it would not surprise me if Sharapova is "unofficially" retired.

No, she just had a shoulder surgery and is trying to make a comeback.
