Re: Best Movie Decade by Oscar Best Pics

They gave an Oscar by a given year from 1934, but which movies won before that?

From 1929

Wings & Sunrise
The Broadway Melody
All Quiet on the Western Front
Cimarron
Grand Hotel
Cavalcade

Rain Man and Driving Miss Daisy are the only dogs in the 80s, loved the rest. Close second to the 30s.

1940s is no exception; Really bad after Pearl Harbor.

1940
National Board of Review: The Grapes of Wrath
NY Film Critics; GW
AA; Rebecca

1941
NBR; CK
NYFC; CK
AA; HGWMV

----------------------

1942
NBR; In Which We Serve
NYFC; IWWS
AA; Mrs. Miniver

1943
NBR; The Ox-Bow Incident
NYFC; Watch on the Rhine
GG; The Song of Bernadette
AA; Casablanca - One of the rare instances that AA got it right

Now watch this;

1944
NBR; None But the Lonely Heart
NYFC; Going My Way
GG; GMW
AA; GMW
This must be the worst snub EVER; to Double Indemnity. So what did AA do? Gave it to Wilder's NEXT film, as usual

1945
NBR; The True Glory
NYFC; The Lost Weekend
GG; TLW
AA; TLW What were they DRINKING

1946
NBR; Henry V
NYFC; The Best Years of Our Lives
GG; same
AA; same

1947
NBR; Monsieur Verdoux
NYFC; Gentleman's Agreement
GG; same
AA; same

1948
NBR; Paisan
NYFC; The Treasure of the Sierre Madre
GG; Jonny Belinda, Treasure of...
AA; Hamlet

1949
NBR; The Bicycle Thief
NYFC; All the King's men
GG; same
AA; same

The war changed everything, and definitely for the worse.

And, AA's choice is really the worst of those.

Re: Best Movie Decade by Oscar Best Pics

I wouldn't use Oscars as a quality criterion, but in terms of both Hollywood and European movies, my favourite decades are 60s and 70s.

Re: Best Movie Decade by Oscar Best Pics

So hard to choose due to the immense differences in film production between those winners in various decades. Surprised 70's is leading the poll That's my least favourite. Don't like any of those films, haven't seen them all though.

30's-60's is my favourite era (50's & 60's probably take the crown generally), but there are so many gems in the 90's and 00's.
