Unless she lucked up and got one of those rent controlled ones that people hang onto until they die.

Re: What's up with NYC and these micro apartments?

I always wanted to move to NYC but the cost of living keeps me down south. I'll never forget visiting my friends from college who moved to parts of NYC last year and hearing how much they paid for rent. I came up for a visit with money to spend and we could barely do anything because they all had no money to their name because of the rent they pay but had half maybe less of the space I have in Charlotte, NC which is like the 17-18th biggest city in the US.

Give me a break. Not everyone wants or needs tons of space.

probably making the least, but also probably have the last concerns (can get by with zero health insurance, don't have to worry about kids, may be taking loans for college, don't mind bumming off other people as much, don't mind really small apartment, don't mind meh living conditions, and may also be getting assistance from parents ;P)

What about San Francisco? Its rent can really match NYC rent, plus the competition is bizarre. SF is also the 2nd most expensive place to live in the US.

For me, the issue has never been about how high the rent is but rather that people in Manhattan live in spaces that are more conducive, IMO, to rats than to human beings. You can find sky high rents anywhere if you look for them. I personally believe that human beings need a certain amount of space to function. Of course as humans we can rationalize anything. You can pee on some folks and tell them it’s raining and they’ll believe it. So if you tell people how lucky they are to live in a cubby hole in Manhattan and that they should feel lucky to pay an arm and a leg for that cubby hole, a certain number of people will fall for the okee dokie. I can't help but think of the Emperor's New Clothes. But if they like it, I love it.

Compare this Manhattan studio:

to this San Francisco studio:

The differences between the kitchens and bathrooms.

And yes, I know that you can probably find tiny apartments in San Francisco but I suspect that they are far more numerous in Manhattan.

But I might be wrong.
