I also never realised RVD was the oracle behind Masha's coaching team/skills/on-court tactics

It would be nice if Maria tweeted something to show us she is OK. But I guess she isn't in the mood either.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

I wasnt planning on posting here for a very long time. I was so distraught by the news of her loss (+ Rogers) that I couldnt fathem discussing tennis or even thinking about it for the near future. I couldnt stay away it seems. I am still so gutted and just cannot stop thinking about how Maria must be feeling. I probs wont be around for a while as some of the negativity in this place (Not SS of course, you guys are awesome) has gotten a bit much and this loss has taken last last bit of enjoyments I had out of the game for a bit.

Hope everyone is coping OK and most importantly hope Maria is too. I still cant believe it happened. This whole Wimbledon seems cursed. The tournament has lost its luster with all the big names gone bar a few so I wont be watching anymore.

Hope you all keep well and hope to be back posting again soon. Knowing me I will be back by the end of the week. I cant stay away LOL.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

Roger's loss feels like the ultimate defeat. And reading articles about "his career ended 26/06/2013" make it worse.

Maria's loss is such a shock out of the blue, I can't even describe it.

I feel so lost...

The media is acting like people died on the court. It's just a sport--plus Roger said himself that he's going to play for many more years to come. Take his word for it.

Sometimes I think RG12 was just a little payback for the bad years after the shoulder injury but now we're done and over.

I didn't read Open from Agassi yet, but I read a quote from it that
«a victory is not as pleasant as a loss is painful. And what you feel after winning doesn't last as long. Not even remotely.»

It's so fucking true
I was like that. Whether it was her winning the 2006 US Open, 2008 Aussie Open, or last year's French, I would always get these grand visions in my head that this would be the start of Maria's ascendance to the top of women's tennis and she would be THE force for an extended period with multiple slams and big accolades. And finally earning respect as a great tennis player.

But then she would never follow through and I lamented the same way you do. Why does she keep losing these big matches? Why is she so inconsistent? Why does she keep teasing us?

And as I took a closer look at her game and the player she is, as I said the other day, I eventually came to the conclusion that Maria is an overachiever and has probably won more in her career than she had a right to. There are reasons why she's come up short so many times. It's those same flaws in her game that end up biting her. No matter what sport you're talking about, if you're a player or a collective team with weaknesses, they will get exposed sooner or later. It's the nature of sports. Maria is not built to be a player of consistency. She was not going to be a 9-10 slam, all-time great type of player.

You can go over all the tough losses in finals and semifinals over her career and see very glaring reasons why she lost those matches. It's just who she is. Not athletic enough, not quick enough, not enough variety, not enough consistency in serves, returns. So we should be celebrating more the 4 slams and 29 titles she's fought so hard to accumulate despite being strapped with those limitations we've gone over so many times.

And I do agree that in a lot of ways, last year's French felt like a parting gift for Maria after all her years of hard work and perseverance. A lot of people to this day are still projecting 7, 8, or 9 slams for Maria when she retires. But I said some time ago that I'd be ecstatic if she wins one more and finishes with a nice tidy 5.

That's not to say I don't think she can get better and still win titles. And losses still bother me, particularly horrible ones like yesterday. She certainly can still win. And with some luck, a major or two isn't out of the question. But I'm just more realistic about her now.
