Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

I just finsished watching and I was pretty happy with what I saw. From the way some of you desribed it I was expecting a Wozniacki type FH. I thought it was fine. She was still dictating play, hitting with great depth and with plenty of power. Yeah it has some spin but she has never hit her forehand completely flat ala Davenport. There has always been a bit of spin.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

The only thing that annoyed me was how much the crowd seemed to be cheering for her opponent. She was getting her fair share too but Xtina was getting massive cheers. It was almost like the old days when Masha was seen as the ice maiden by crowds.

^I was surprised, but then I remembered it was almost the same thing last year and she was playing Rodionova of all people.
Wimbledon love their upsets in general but yeah they don't seem particularly fond of Maria now.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

I think the crowd thing was also due to Maria being on after Roger, who whitewashed his opponent. They were desperate for a competitive match. But it's definitely weird how over the years the French crowd have become more fond of Maria than the Wimbledon crowd

BTW, Serena apologized to Masha according to Masha's press conference, so the comments were about her after all . Mess.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

Just watched the highlights, happy that her weird grunting during this year's clay season is gone.
Pretty sharp for her first match on grass, I'm quite positive.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

I know it has saved her multiple times and got her many free points but if I was Maria's opponent, I would stand a bit to the right every time she serves from the AD court.

Safarova will do that, even though Maria tries to go out wide a lil more now.

Re: Wimbledon 2013: Reminiscences of Green Grass

MTE How many times she banged down service winners down the tee from that side? And Mlad still couldn't guessed it. Sarin and Vika would've anticipated those and eat them up.

Yeah, it's definitely been a recurring pattern over the last few years that the crowd have been cheering any opponent that is close to knocking her out

It's strange because the Wimbledon crowds used to be really fond of her -- I got the sense that her reaction after she won the title in '04 really endeared her to a lot of people, plus Wimbledon crowds have a tendency to "adopt" people who make their breakthroughs at Wimbledon (Lisicki gets huge support there for the same reason, because most people in the crowd knows Wimbledon is where she's had all her significant success). But I guess as time went on, as memories of her '04 win faded and when she started winning other Slams (therefore the crowds didn't feel they had "ownership" over her anymore), they were just left with a game that isn't to the typical Wimbledon-goer's taste

That's why you don't really want to lean to the right too much as Maria might go wide or do a kicker which will put you off balance. Her t-serve on ad court is amazing tho - lots of pace and the angle is great at times, very short and hard to reach.

And that little slice to it. The ball just moves to the right away from the opponent.
